62787 2002-07-19 10:49:00 If you copy a shortcut into the start up menu, does this always open at startup, or does it have the same problem?
If you press control Alt Delete, what tasks are running when the problem occurs?

62788 2002-07-20 01:21:00 hi
links on the start up menu, desktop and quick launch bar do not work.
i only have 3 tasks ruinning at startup.explorer and systray, which are nesesary, and osd which is for multimedia keboard on screen display.
it appaeras to be totaly random
i thinking it might be something like system restore doing a check or something else that does background work.could this be likely

thanks

62789 2002-07-20 07:03:00 Restore occurs at every startup, unless disk size is less than 200MB. (creates a checkpoint file) It then occurs every ten hours while the PC is on. It is hard to see why this would only fail sometimes. You could disable it if you are willing to risk it support.microsoft.com
There are also the selective startup options you could try and then manually start the options you have chosen not to start for normal operation. support.microsoft.com This link has some slow procedures which will not help at present as it does not always occur.
If you look in control panel and scheduled tasks, you can see if anything else is scheduled at random intervals.
The problem does not seem to be software related. Problem PCs which you have described, generally do not just start working again if it is software.
Have you done defrags and scandisk?
Is there any external hardware which might be on or off when the PC starts?
