| 62520 | 2002-07-15 00:02:00 | Hi, a colleage of mine has ISDN connection which is used to dial up his ISP. The ISDN account shows many more calls to the ISP than expected - normal use is to surf web at start and end of day, and check email 3 or 4 times during day. The ISPs access tools shows that the PC is connecting to the ISP for a few seconds on an hourly basis, even when browser and mail client are definitely shut down. Also as the PC has to be left on at night, this happens right through the night when nobody is using the PC - again on an exact hourly basis. Some days (maybe when he reboots PC?) it doesn't happen, but then it all starts again a couple of days later. This is a real $$ problem as he pays for local calls being a business and this is costing. Anyone got any ideas - does it sound like a virus or config problem? |

Given the frequency however, it begs the question is there any time synchronising software installed? You need to install zonealarm or similar firewall software, this will also tell you what is accessing the net, probably your first step. Go to www.google.co.nz and enter "zonealarm" for 242,000 links. |

| 62523 | 2002-07-15 09:16:00 | Does your friend have some computers networked with Microsoft Home Networking? If so, he may find that it is the DHCP or DNS attempting to access the internet for IP address resolution. A work-around is to go onto static addressing. |
