62484 2002-07-14 13:46:00 I have winME with IE6 and a son with raging hormones.

He's visited quite a few sites with very interesting names and we find that when using search engines, the drop down menu of previous search selections clearly advertises his trail. This upsets my wife ( instead of my knowing smile).;)

Whats the fix? Can you edit these listings , shut the boxes off or generally clear the record?

62485 2002-07-14 14:39:00 Hehehe, my girlfriend gets angry too.. LOL

anyway open up IE6, and go to tools -> internet options. you'll be at general tab.

Just click on "delete files" button on Temporary Internet files section" (this will delete all the cache like pictures, icons, etc)

Then under "history section" click on clear history button. (this will delete the site that have been visited in the past.

Then move alone to "content tab" in there you'll see personal information section. Click on autocomplete button and click on clearforms button. (this will clear all the words that have been put in the search box which I think it's what you're after). You could also clear the passwords as well. It will just erase the passwords that have been saved in the cookies.

62486 2002-07-14 21:06:00 Thanks for that. Seems to have done the trick but I assume regular housekeeping may be required. Happy surfing. Waldorf (471)

62488 2002-07-15 13:10:00 You try this . In IE options under content tab, goto autocomplete . Under "use autocomplete for" section, untick web address and forms, this way when you type something in the autocomplete won't pop up .

then go to Advanced tab, scroll right down to the bottom . Under security section, tick on "Empty temporary internet files folder when browser is closed" . This will empty out all the files (pictures) when IE is closed .

Now the tricky part, emptying out history when you restart your pc .
If you're in winxp, create this batch file
echo y| del c:\docume~1\james\locals~1\history\history . ie5\msh ist~1\* . *
(rename "james" to your name or admin) .
Put the batch file in the start up folder so everytime when pc starts it will run the batch file which will erase the history of IE .

But this batch file will not delete the history in the Address box in IE . But all your history in the history option in IE will be deleted otherwise .

I'll try to find the actually file that keeps history info or find a way to erase the history in the location bar automatically . For now those suggestions should work no sweat .

62489 2002-07-15 14:27:00 ops sorry about the batch file part . I just found out that the history is kept in seperate folders for different days . eg monday folder, tuesday folder, etc . That batch file will only delete the first folder thats in the history directory .

Here's a new one .

deltree /y c:\docume~1\james\locals~1\history\history . ie5

Now you'll need the deltree . exe file for this batch file . Just search around the net for it . put it in c:\ and it should work .

62490 2002-07-15 15:06:00 I've found the complete solution for your problem now . To finish the last solution (deleting the url location), you need to create a registry .

Windows Registry Editor Version 5 . 00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs]
"url1"=-
"url2"=-
"url3"=-
"url4"=-
"url5"=-
"url6"=-
"url7"=-
"url8"=-
"url9"=-
"url10"=-
"url11"=-
"url12"=-
"url13"=-
"url14"=-
"url15"=-
"url16"=-
"url17"=-
"url18"=-
"url19"=-
"url20"=-
"url21"=-
"url22"=-
"url23"=-
"url24"=-
"url25"=-

The location bar can keep 25 url's so that's why I created 25 entries in there .

Save it as * . reg and place it on startup folder so it executes automatically when your pc starts . The only annoying thing is that you'll have to press enter twice to say yes and ok to the registry file .

If you're not sure about the batch file and registry part, you can contact on icq 28214960 or email me for the files .

If you're not on winxp then i'll have to create a different batch file and registry .

62491 2002-07-15 15:08:00 An easier way is to install tweakui off the pc world cd and one of the options tabs is called paranoia. This has a whole range of options to delete various histories including the documents accessed list which will also contain the names of all the "educational" pictures your son has been perusing.
Its probably a good time to talk to him as well and ensure that he understands that many of these "free" sites actually attempt to install a dialler program onto your computer and reroute your call through where ever.....I think some of the former russian states are the most popular at the moment. These calls cost you the proverbial arm and leg and then some. I have heard of charges running at $5 US per minute on some of the worst sites.
If your son feels the need to visit these sort of sites just remind him to stick to the front pages only and decline all offers of free tours, viewers and other items "needed" to view their site.

62492 2002-07-15 15:08:00 Damn it, here's my email. boom23@paradise.net.nz

Why can't I edit my post instead of creating a new one.. it's real annoying.

62493 2002-07-15 15:21:00 oh yeah thanks dipstick.. TweakUI can also delete the url location. I forgot to mention that. But you still need the batch file though. Coz TweakUI can't do it. boom23 (176)
