63040 2002-07-16 10:13:00 I recently purchased a GameBoyAdvance system, and looking for help i went here:

http://www.awrevival.com

now, every picture on this site is in .PNG format. for some reason the only way i can see these pictures through my browser (IE 5) is by right click the little red x, clicking properties, copying the address of the picture and pasting it into my address bar. now, one of these pages has over 250 images. no way am i going to do that for each and every one of them. some of my friends have tried this site and haven't had a problem. i couldn't find this file type on my computer either, but when i open them (eg go to the address i copied) a quicktime logo appears before the picture does. i'm not sure what i should do - something in IE settings, add the file type, change a quicktime setting....?

thanks for all your help.

63041 2002-07-16 10:25:00 site opens pix OK in IE6, but its s--l--o--w.

I wonder if you are just timing out as it took minutes and I have Jetstream.

It warns you that you may have to reload..In fact my Jetstream just gave up...

63042 2002-07-16 10:36:00 yeah but i tried stopping it and reloading the pics one at a time (right click, show picture etc) and that didn't work either. yeah i do have a 56 k lol. hmmm maybe i should update IE then. been needing and update for a year anyway. i_like_cookies (1079)
63043 2002-07-16 11:58:00 You have quicktime installed? The very latest?

A bit background info on PNG's - the best browser to support PNGs is IE for the Mac, then Netscape, then IE for windows. Unfortunately, no browser (that I'm aware of) fully exploits the capabilitys of PNG graphics. Even a lot of graphics software still don't deal with PNGs very well.

Having said that, PNG is rarely used on the web, because of this poor support. It is unknown why, because a PNG is way better than a JPG or a GIF - interlacing is done quadrupally and therefore is faster, PNG support alpha transparency, and generally makes for a smaller file.

For more info go to the PNG Homepage (www.libpng.org).

63044 2002-07-16 15:05:00 im not too sure why, but all is coming fine on my computer, maybe its because i have an app that takes care of the png file format (fireworks, and i dont mean take care of it in the browser...), but maybe its because i have ie6?...more support maybe, somehow...?

the png files popped up as quickly as gif/jpegs, whoa, actually maybe 5 times quicker...!

63045 2002-07-16 21:01:00 Hmmm, i'm having err... trouble updating IE5. i click tools>windows updates then get taken to the MS update website. I select IE6 update or whatever its called then go through the process of downloading it etc. it then says i have to restart. i do this and it says updating system files etc, but when i check IE, its still version 5. stupid microsoft.

anyhow, maybe if I update IE i can see the pictures... other people above and at other places have had no trouble seeing them with IE6. *sigh*

63047 2002-07-17 06:10:00 Maybe it's trying, unsuccessfully, to "update" IE6 when you have IE5. Stupider things have happened. Do they have an option on the site called something like "Upgrade to IE6"?

IE6 is on the CD with this month's PC World.

63048 2002-07-17 06:15:00 Think you are right Graeme, the subtle difference between "update" and "upgrade"...

Windows update will recognise IE5 and update it - to a patched IE 5.
