| 63051 | 2002-07-16 09:39:00 | Hi, I am wanting to dive into LTSP mostly for the purpose of tinkering with something REALLY COOL, and to learn a bit about TCP/IP networks, as well as make some use out of a few old PCs, and share our internet connection... If you've never heard of LTSP, you can check it out at www.ltsp.org To initially set up this system, I have a client machine of the following specs: 486DX 33mhz 8MB RAM ISA Video Card 10MB NIC (3Com Etherlink III) Floppy Drive Kyb, monitor etc Which is linked to the server (AMD Athlon 1400, 512MB SDRAM, GF2, 40GB, 10MB 3Com Etherlink III NIC) via a crossover cable. I have yet to download all the bits and pieces, but before I do, can anyone see any problems with the setup (like limitations of the client machine - I realise it'll be slow, but will it be usable...)? Next off, I am of the understanding that I use a boot floppy on the client, while installing the Core and Kernel files on the server. I intend to use X-Windows, but not the fonts or local apps packages... X-Windows because I am hopeless with a terminal, and no fonts or local apps because my client PC is a dog. Anything wrong yet? If that looks in order, I'll go ahead with downloading and installing the packages as above. Then you can listen to me detail how it's not working! :) Erin |

I was suspecting something a little more specific, and it seems incredible that I've got it right first time with something I don't properly understand! Uh, no relatives in Levin sorry :) One or two friends, no relatives... And what the hell brought that question about? - Extra Random! :) Erin |

Just wondering if maybe you were one of his as he said he had kids who lived out and about.. Nothing nefarius. :D Oh yes, and yes I do think so. I know a dude who is running a linux box based on a 486 for a number of years now. He's just got the bare basics neccessary for a file server. Runs a board off it. |

| 63055 | 2002-07-16 12:11:00 | Hi, It is possible I suppose, I have a few uncles and the like loitering around the North Island, but none live in Levin. One relation lived in Porirua for some time, but has now moved to California (yay for the brain drain!), and likely wouldn't go all the way back to Levin just to have his PC fixed... :) Erin |

Have you checked the minimum requirements? I use Xterms with only 8megs + 2mb video, and they run from a linux server ok as long as you keep the resolution low (1024x768x8). Although running linux you will have less than 8megs available. |

The main problems can be with tftp which handles the download . Just remember that it can be a major security hole . It's not too bad as long as its directories are kept limited . I saw something about this while it was a project, not a Project and it looked good . I never tried it, because I prefer non-GUI --- I use conex, which is a very good freeware DOS terminal . It's amazing --- has kermit, vt emulation, and can even emulate a Tektronix graphics terminal . |
