2002-07-17 02:51:00 | the most important thing to remember with benchmarking is that to compare against others useing the EXACT same benchmark. for eg different verions of 3Dmark benchmark will give different results as will quake3 demo001 be different from demo quazer. | tweak'e (174) | |
2002-07-17 12:19:00 | Hi Tweak'e, I used FreshDevices FreshDiagnose to benchmark my PC's. I loaded Win ME (pause for laughter) and then ran FreshDiagnose on each one. Does this program give a reasonable idea for a comparison of machines? Just intrigued, as it really panned the PII 400, thought a Duron 900 wasn't to bad and raved over the Athlon 1100 Thunderbird.

2002-07-17 12:33:00 | the last time i tried the fresh diagnose it killed my pc. never touched it since. i would stick to more well known benchmarking. | tweak'e (174) | |
2002-07-17 12:43:00 | add to that (u can tell im half asleep) have a look at what progs the reveiw sites use. that way you can compare against there testing as well. note- the tests MUST be run at the exact same settings for it to mean anything. sisoft sandra is handy. also HDtach, 3dmarks, quake3, ut2003, intel io meter, there are heaps. but its working out what the results mean is a different story. i've had a machine so fine tuned it gave GREAT quake3 scors but it sucked to actually play the game. some test also only test hardware not the speed it runs at when windows is actually useing it.

2002-07-17 12:49:00 | You can also try pc pitstop which is a benchmark site that also offers some interesting tips on sorting out any problems it detects. Take the rating for your Hard Drive speed a bit tongue in cheek tho as I've yet to see a machine that actually gets a good result. The benchmark will compare your machine against all others that have used the site so cab give a good indication how yours stacks up against others. http://pcpitstop.com
