62947 2002-07-16 01:29:00 Lately I'm getting more and more rubbish sent to my Hotmail account. It seems the more I block them, the more I get!
I know that spammers use different E-mail addresses all the time so that blocking one seems a bit of a useless exercise.
The only thing I can think of that would work that would by-pass this, would be for Hotmail to have a filter that blocks E-mails that have no content, as most (if not all) of the ones I get, have nothing in them when I open them.
They do have an elaborate filtering system, but only for sender's names and E-mail addresses, and when these just keep changing, it's a waste of time.
Is there a solution to this, if so, I'd love to hear it, as I'm getting close to wanting to close my account with Hotmail. (it's just that it does come in handy sometimes)
Also, can anyone enlighten me as to what the point of these spammers is? I mean if they were to put an URL inside with the words 'Come and have a look at this!', I could understand, but there is nothing. The only thing I could do is reply and ask them what their point is, but I didn't get where I am today by replying to spam and not knowing that that is a very silly thing to do!:p
Thanks, Emma

62948 2002-07-16 01:42:00 As u know, ur not the only one with the spam problems...
i've wanted to close my account too but, then that would be the end of hotmail :(
my block list has reached maximum 250
and the safe list has reached its maximum..
but spam...still comes..

All i do is just put up with it really...
let the list grow...delete once-twice a week...

Other than that u could use yahoo.com as i've had a account with them for a year now, (dont really use it) and havent had ONE spam yet...(touch wood)...so yahoo is pretty good with stopping spam..

62949 2002-07-16 02:17:00 Emma: great idea, but what if you got some email from politicians? ;-)

Mopre seriously, I believe that hotmail (aka Microsoft) have changed the default settings so that your email address is "shared". That is, they sell your email address to the parasitic lifeforms which send that rubbish. It might be too late if you did not change the settings back.

But it is not compulsory to use hotmail. There are others who provide free email services: yahoo.com, www.nzoom.co.nz, www.orcon.net.nz, etc.

62950 2002-07-16 02:43:00 Thanks for that info Graham L, I would unsubscribe from Hotmail - I hardly use it - but I use Messenger to keep in touch with my family overseas and so, am obliged to have an account with hotmail..... don't I?
It's just a nuisance to have keep having to clean up that rubbish all the time.

62951 2002-07-16 02:50:00 If I don't know who the person is that is sending me an email, or if I am not on the mailing list I just delete........ ALSO, be very wary of opening emails from those you don't know - theres some very nasty viruses going round....... Baldy (26)
62952 2002-07-16 02:54:00 Hi Emma
I also thought a Hotmail address was needed for MSN Messenger but found later that it isn't necessarily the case. I signed up for a Passport using an e-mail alias, that I was subsequently going to drop, to upload photos to the MSN Photos site.
This is now able to be used as my e-mail address for logging into MSN Messenger. You do need to make sure your contacts don't try to use this address to send you e-mails.

62953 2002-07-16 05:38:00 Why not use a different email service? Hotmail is so popular and commonly used that spamming programs are designed look for ***@hotmail . com accounts .

There is so many others is hardly worth listing them .

I've never had spam on email . com, mail . com or yahoo . co . nz .

Dump hotmail and try one of the less common and less targeted ones .

Please bear with me, I'm not a 'newbee', but never too old to learn; What is an 'e-mail alias'... A made-up name? If so, is it not still an e-mail address?... please tell me how to do that if it means I can get rid of these pesky spams!

None of my friends and family send me mail via Hotmail anyway, I only keep it for Messenger. (Oops, hope Bill isn't reading this! he would soon put a stop to that! ;\ )
It's one of the few things left that are still free!
Thanx Capital

I have Yahoo too and agree with you as far as more exiting etc... Better sound too!, but it took me long time and much frustration to get them finally used to Messenger (non-English speaking rellies) and dread having to introduce them to new system! ;-)
Will keep it in mind tho!
