62824 2002-07-15 10:24:00 Ok.... so I'm too lazy to search thru the archives and I can't find any such relevant info on MS website....

What is the difference between the WinXP (either home or pro) Upgrade and "standard" boxed versions? If I can the upgrade version, can I install it clean fresh or only limited to an "upgrade" way of installation?

Also, if there any difference between the standard and academic versions? (Beside the fact that you need a student ID to buy it?)

Many thanks in advance.

62825 2002-07-15 10:39:00 An upgrade edition is the same apart from needs to be and upgrade from an earlier version of windows (not to early a version). You can still do a clean install BUT you will need to insert your older windows disc as confirmation that you are eligible for the upgrade.

Academic versions are the same in everyway as the full versions (sometimes academic only comes out in upgrade though).

62826 2002-07-15 10:58:00 You can only upgrade from 98SE or ME.

As JM says, you can choose to clean install, but beware if you had the previous system as OEM with only a recovery CD. If you have a major failure you may have to reload the old OS then upgrade again as the recovery CD isn't recognised as a Windows CD?
