63371 2002-07-18 09:38:00 Could someone please explain the difference between a chipset and a CPU Gary (1106)
63372 2002-07-18 09:55:00 The CPU is normally removable and upgradeable eg 486, P1, P2, P3 P4
The chipset are processors on the motherboard eg Video, audio, PCI controller
The chipset is not upgradeable but BIOS patches are available to upgrade chipsets so that they work when new products are introduced.

63373 2002-07-18 10:02:00 CPU - Abbreviation of Central processing Unit, It is the brain of the computer, the CPU is also known as the processor or central processor .

Chipset - A number of integrated circuits designed to perform one or more related functions . For example, one chipset may provide the basic functions of a modem while another provides the CPU functions for a computer . Newer chipsets generally include functions provided by two or more older chipsets . In some cases, older chipsets that required two or more physical chips can be replaced with a chipset on one chip .

A chipset is the core functionality of a motherboard .

Hope this helps you out,

63374 2002-07-18 10:11:00 as far as pc's are concerned the chipset is the foundation on which the pc is built. it provides all the connections between all the devices (cpu, ram, video, cards, ports etc). kinda like the glue holding everytyhing to together. tweak'e (174)
63375 2002-07-18 11:19:00 Ha, now's my chance! (hope you don't mind me butting in Gary) .

What is a Southbridge and Northbridge on the mobo? Are they to do with the chipsets?

Sorry, I know I can look it up but you guys are really good at explaining things . :-)

63376 2002-07-18 11:35:00 o you tease.....;-)

lets see if my tired brain will regurgate the info.

the northbridge and southbridges are parts of the chipset. most comman as two seperate chips but bot always. some chipsets have the NB & SB in 1 chip (sis for eg)

the idea of seperate chisets is so mobo manafactures can provide diiferent features buy change the SB.

NB has the agp, pci slots, ram, cpu, ide, serial and parrell ports while SB has intergrated audio, isa slots, usb, firewire(rare), onboard lan/modem.

the two chips are connected by a bus. in older chipsets its the pci bus but newer ones have a seperate bus. different types/speeds depending on manafacture.

sites like www.anandtech.com will have a better discript than i do.
