"The performance you’re paying for with the Radeon 9700 also buys you a card that will last you down the road. ATI has been running Doom3 on the Radeon 9700 for a while now, and Carmack has publicly thrown his support behind the card; keep in mind that it wasn’t too long ago that Carmack wouldn’t even touch the Radeon 8500 because of poor drivers. And for those of you that are wondering whether a 128MB card will be necessary, Doom3 will use at least 80MB of textures."

63423 2002-07-18 23:21:00 Sigh. My likely budget for a new card won't go any higher than $500. Sigh, sigh, sigh ........ Biggles (121)
63424 2002-07-19 06:28:00 I wouldn't touch a new video card yet, you have 2 other new cards coming out in the near future

Matrox Parhelia-512 (The KING of video cards)
Features: DirectX9, V2.0 compliant vertex pipeline (2 x the capacity of Geforce4 and 4 x the capacity of Radeon8500)
32 bit colour (All other video cards today do only 24 bit colour)
256-bit DDR memory interface (current high-end GPU's use a 128-bit DDR interface)
16x Fragement Anti-Aliasing (FAA)
Triple Monitor surround Gaming alowing you to use 3 monitors to create a wide screen.
RRP US$400 for 128Mb version

Also there are other video cards coming out before christmas, the P10 Visual Graphics Processor from 3DLabs/Creative and the NV30 from Nvidia (Geforce 5) which should both support Direct X 9

So there will be even MORE to choose from in the coming months, and price and performance will be the deciding factor I feel.

63425 2002-07-19 06:54:00 Matrox Parhelia is already out and is not even up to g4 speed. not much use for high end gameing.

g5 will not be out for some time yet but it should be faster than the Radeon 9700.

as soon as you buy it it will be out of date ;-)

63427 2002-07-19 09:51:00 There's not much point in waiting for the 'next big thing' because by then there will be something else to wait for. So you won't end up with anything :)

As for the Radeon 9700 THEY ARE HERE or well I'm 99% positive that they are here. Or they will be in a couple of days.

63428 2002-07-19 10:10:00 Waiting for the next big thing is a sure way to drive yourself crazy. I'm still gonna spend my modest budget on anew card around Oct-Nov and it won't be the latest and greatest....

.... but it still nice to drawl over reviews like that one :-)

63429 2002-07-19 10:35:00 You should start doing some video card reviews then Bruce. -=JM=- (16)
