63383 2002-07-18 11:14:00 Celeron, Win98 SE and a PS/2 mouse.

Last weekend the time had come for a nice reformat. Lots of minor reasons.

Ran fdisk, reformatted and started the reinstall. It crashed. After numerous attempts - removing hardware as I went - it finally worked.

It was the mouse what done it. Reinstalling without it, just using keyboard commands, solved the problem.

Put mouse back in, loaded Norton anti-virus - and it crashed on install.

Have now swapped to a serial mouse, disabled PS/2 mouse in BIOS and peace reigns.

Anyone else with a computer allergic to mice? Or is it just mine?

Any ideas if it's just the one mouse or a problem with PS/2 mice in general?

63384 2002-07-18 23:23:00 I would suspect the mouse itself. Try another PS2 one and if the same problem then it would be like I said the first time - the PS2 port.

63385 2002-07-18 23:30:00 I'm more inclined to give the "#@!" mouse to my husband rather than risk it myself. On second thoughts.... I invariably have to fix his problems too, usually whilst I'm trying to do something else.

Feeling somewhat bruised by the experiences of the last week I'm sticking to a serial mouse for the near future. It works. I just wondered if others had hit this problem.

63386 2002-07-18 23:31:00 I had the same problem on a PC a few years back . Any PS2 mouse I plugged in would not work . Serial did . Lkke you I went with the logical solution and didn't bother looking any further, lazy bastard that I am . . . Biggles (121)
63387 2002-07-19 00:12:00 Thank You Bruce!!

It wasn't me teetering on the brink of insanity! Someone else has had the same problem. I feel much better now.

Who would suspect a mouse? The process of elimination had it quite a long way down the list.

63388 2002-07-19 00:48:00 I had a similar problem more recently (well, yera or 2 ago) with USB . It was V1 USB on the motherboard I think, but no matter what I did I couldn't get it to see my USB mouse . It was probably the whole USB port (I didn't have any other USB devices around to test it with) . I ended up using the serial port again . But there were no device driver conflicts, etc to indicate a problem . Since that motherboard went away I've had no further problems with USB or PS/2 ports . Sometimes, trackign a problem down just ins't worth the effort if there is a workable solution . . . Biggles (121)
