63683 2002-07-20 02:45:00 Hi,
I have a problem with my modem -
I'm only connected to the net @ 26400 bps - no higher, no lower.
I aslo only get this speed when using Hyper Terminal and connected to people.
Any way, heres where i get stumped - when I go into My Computer - then - Dial - Up Networking, and when i rite clik my connection and choose properties, it comes up this:
Dial Up Networking cannot find the specifed modem.
Install a modem or select a modem before you dial

It then has an OK button, and once clicked it goes into the properties and has general, Server Types, Scripting & multilink tabs

Without changing anything, I can still dial up and coonect ( @ 26400) without a problem - even tho Dial Up Networking thinks theres no modem...

So, If I do unistall the modem, restart computer, the computer finds the new hardware, and installs it, but at the end - it says error copying file and continues loading windows.

Then it goes back to the start - I can still connect, but DUN thinks its not connected.

I'm using a:
Conexant SoftK56 Data, Fax, Voice PCI modem
on WIN 98SE

Please help...
let me now if u need any more info.

63684 2002-07-20 03:07:00 UPDATE
Also, If i go to add new hardwae and search for the modem - it doesn't find any on com1 & 2

63685 2002-07-20 04:07:00 It is a win modem so it will not find the com port ,win modems use a virtual com port [ usually com3 ] but it doen,t really matter which one it is
it could be com 34.

When you reinstall the modem and it says error copying file,is it copying from the cd rom or it,s own driver database?
I f it is copying from it,s own database you may have a corrupt file.
then best way to uninstall a win modem is to go into ,contol panel, add and remove programs, there should be a program there to uninstall the drivers, but before you do that make sure you have the drivers to reinstall
if you don,t ,down load the lastest from conexant,s or the manufacturers
website, your modem is a voice as well ,Conexant will only be able to supply the data and fax part of the drivers, but if you don,t use the voice part it ,doesn,t matter
Then all you have to do is restart the pc and Windows should find the modem again, but this time it will ask for the drivers, point it in the the right direction [ either the cd rom or the directory were you have the driver ] it will be looking for an inf file.
I think that the Conexant drivers come with an install program as well, you may want to use this instead. If you do when you reboot the pc and Win asks for the drivers just click cancel, then go to the directory were the driver is and find the exe program, which will install it automatically.
After you have installed your modem,go to dialup networking ,if it comes up with can,t find modem ,click ok ,then go down to the drop down menu
were it lists the modem and select the correct modem, and wile your there untick logon to network.
If the modem still does not work, goto control panel ,modems, diagnostics and more info, there should be no errors.

63686 2002-07-20 05:43:00 sounds like no driver, and curiously it must default to something like a 28.8 modem?

We slag windows at times, but hey, it is not all bad if it can limp along like this!

I agree, it needs a new driver but it could also be some windows dll files involved separate to the driver. May need to run "sfc /scannow" from the start-run and update windows system files?

63687 2002-07-20 08:00:00 Hey thanks for all this - godfather wot is sfc/scannow thing u mention, and how do i run it? fergie (424)
63688 2002-07-20 08:09:00 tech mister -
When you reinstall the modem and it says error copying file,is it copying from the cd rom or it,s own driver database?

it doesn't ask for a cd - it just does it itself, and also, I checked add/remove programs, and found nothing...
only thing to do with drivers was my Nvidia dsiplay drivers - but tht's got nothing to do with this.
And also, I went to the manufactueres site, and they only have generic drivers - r these ok?
Cheers

63689 2002-07-20 08:24:00 I am not all that familiar with W98, but if it runs along the same lines as others, it has a "system file checker" (sfc)
Instructions as previous

Click on "start"
Click on "run"
Type "sfc"<space>"/scannow"<enter> in the run dialog box.

If the facility is available it should run its integrity check on all .dll (dynamic link libraries) in windows system files.
It will likely ask for your W98 CD, to do the compare against and should repair any corrupted.

63690 2002-07-20 13:19:00 So, If I do unistall the modem, restart computer, the computer finds the new hardware, and installs it, but at the end - it says error copying file and continues loading windows.

What do you mean when you say ...then it goes back to the start?
I think you should download the Generic drivers from Conexant,s website, their drivers will be more up to date.
Is your modem listed in the device manager?
There should be a modem listed there and also an enumerator.
Also does the modem appear in control panel ,modems/
let me know.

63691 2002-07-20 13:59:00 Dial Up Networking cannot find the specifed modem
Install a modem or select a modem before you dial

Under the General tab at the bottom "Connect Using"
Have you got the correct modem showing, are you able to select anything else.

63692 2002-07-20 22:29:00 OK.
Firstly - god-father I got than scan working, picked up a few files that needed restoring.
Thanks, but no improvement that i no of.

- tech-mister, So, If I do unistall the modem, restart computer, the computer finds the new hardware, and installs it, but at the end - it says error copying file and continues loading windows.

Then it goes back to the start - I can still connect, but DUN thinks its not connected.

From that, I mean that it goes back to my first problem,
I'm only connected to the net @ 26400 bps - no higher, no lower.
I aslo only get this speed when using Hyper Terminal and connected to people.
Any way, heres where i get stumped - when I go into My Computer - then - Dial - Up Networking, and when i rite clik my connection and choose properties, it comes up this:

Yes my modem is listed in the Device Manager. May I ask what an enumerator and how to find it?

And, Yes it does appear in the Cntrl Panel / modem. It says its on COM3 - this mean anything?
I've also started to download the generic drivers from Conexant.

- and to Jim B Yes it is the correct modem listed in there, and its the only one - no others.

Hope this all helps,
let me know if you need anymore info
Cheers
