63559 2002-07-19 10:07:00 I'm having some problems with a 4 year old win2k PC siezing and am doing some maintenance. It's been a lemon from day 1 but not quite bad enough to warrant throwing it out. The manufacturer took it in for tests when it was new and couldn't find any real problems.

For some time I've had Norton utilities running and on startup it tries to check the disks but can't because of a sharing error.

Finally tonight I have put the PC into safe mode and tried from there - similar error: "The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained". That's on the C: drive (only about 2 years old). D: is the original hard disk, is physically separate and has no problems.

I've loaded up a temperature monitor too, but don't know what is acceptable and what's too hot. Its sitting on about 40C which seems hot to me.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Sarah

63560 2002-07-19 10:23:00 To run a scanner during system startup
Running a scanner during system startup is not the same as running it after system startup. During system startup, fewer files are open, so a scanner is more likely to be able to obtain exclusive access to the drive. Norton Disk Doctor for Windows NT/2000/XP does not have the capability of running during the bootup process, but CHKDSK does. If you receive the above message, you can run CHKDSK during the bootup process by answering Yes to the question "Would you like to schedule a repair to occur the next time you start the system?"

To set a scanner to run during startup the next time Windows NT/2000/XP starts, follow these steps:
1. Open Norton Disk Doctor.
2. Check Fix Errors.
3. Select the drive.
4. Deselect any other drives.
5. Click Diagnose.
6. Wait for the following prompt:

"NDD could not perform a diagnosis or repair because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained. NDD can diagnose this drive if 'Fix Errors' is unchecked. Would you like to schedule a repair to occur the next time you restart the system?"

7. Click Yes. The next time the computer boots, a repair scanner will run during the bootup process.

63562 2002-07-19 16:46:00 40C is only slightly warm. Not too hot.
It will warm up quite a bit when you play games and things.

63563 2002-07-20 02:54:00 thanks for the info. I hadn't realised the fail message was so generalised. I will have to keep looking for other reasons for the PC to lock up now :)

and thanks Sparky for the temperature feedback.
