2002-07-19 09:16:00 Hi, I recently had my Seagate Barracuda ATA II 20.4GB replaced under Warranty. I have tried to enable DMA without success. Under disk properties the DMA box is available which i tick and reboot however upon restart box is unchecked. I know the drive is DMA capable as my prev drive(identical model) run with DMA enabled and consequently gave much better performance. Drive is set as Master on Primary IDE . I run a PC partner M/.Board with Via Mp3 apollo chipset and are using Via 4 in 1 drivers. Using Win98 Tats (1119)
2002-07-19 09:25:00 There is a utility (uta100d.exe) downloadable from the Seagate site, that allows you to change the interface performance of Seagate drives. For example, you could limit a drive to ATA33. This is normally only required for old bioses that may get confused by high performance drives. If your replacement drive was not brand spanking new, it may be worth trying this utility, to see if your drive has been 'detuned'. wuppo (41)
2002-07-19 09:59:00 there is also a bug in windows that makes the tick dissappear even tho the dma is enabled. if you find the drive is slow you may have a clash with a driver. a comman one is SB16 emulation. try disableing it and check if the DMA can be enabled. tweak'e (174)
2002-07-20 06:46:00 Thanks for your help you were spot on. The Uata100 utility worked a treat. I noticed it also changed it from a "type" 47 disk to 46.
I wonder why i did not have to use this utility the 1st time with my identical drive and bios/M/board. Perhaps it was detuned after all!?
