63704 2002-07-24 09:44:00 wow fergie, great feedback!
you deserve all the help you can get!

one thing, has it ever worked properly?
it sounds like the modem has amnesia, and I wonder if there is some non-volatile ram in its innards that is malfunctioning?

mothing that could be done about it in all probability, may be time for a replacement? If it has always been like this, its either incompatable or faulty, if it happened for no reason other than a pci slot shift its either unhappy with the interrupt or faulty?

63705 2002-07-24 10:09:00 Ok ,Here we go again .... You can,t install your modem with the windows install
modem wizard and you can,t use com1 and 2 there should be no modems installed on those
com ports. The driver you downloaded will install the modem on com3 automatically
in fact it creates it,s own virual com port. This is why your pc froze when you tried
to install it on com1...the best thing to do now is go to control panel/add&remove
programs ,select your modem drivers and uninstall them properly, restart pc and install
drivers afresh, then go to control panel /modems /diagonstics and make sure it is working alright
you should only have one modem there and no modems installed on com1 or 2
Try your connection again ,if it is no better ,it may just end up being your
phone line .
I had the same thing happen to me a few months ago ,for weeks I could only
connect at 36k then for no reason it went back to 52k.
One last thing you could do is go into modem properties /advanced,I think[I,m on XP at the moment]
and in the extra settings box ,type AT&F,it will force the modem to connect at
115k,but unforunatally it will not speed up your connection ,but it might make you feel better.

That has happened to me before, too. Sure makes the blood boil!

What I do now, if I know I've got a lot of typing to do, is open Notepad and do it in there then I copy and paste it into the forum reply (or post) box.

I don't cut it in case gremlins get in and lose that too.

After the post is safely loaded on the forum I just close Notepad without saving.

63708 2002-07-24 10:24:00 Your best shot is try another brand or model, or anything.

I had a problem with a modem that would not run at all in one machine. Stuck it in another machine (identical) and it went fine. Tried another in the first, and went fine. Totally mystified, but these winmodems can be a great pain in the wotsit.

On the other hand, there could be something with your ISP.

63709 2002-07-24 20:55:00 Ok,
Firstly, Hard luck tech_mister same thing happened to me once, I now use susan b's method when writing long ones - in notepad .
Heres a little history:
We used to have Infogen as our ISP - we connected at about 40-52k, which was good - but we got "line Busy" alot, then oneday (can''t remeber when) it dialed up at 26k - it went like this for about a month before i took notice, then Infogen rose there price, so we decided to change to paradise - i thought this would get rid of our 26K speed .
However, no luck .
I have rang tech support abou 5 times now - no luck, asked many computer shop owners - no luck, and here I am here . . .

But I think I will just replace the modem now - they're not that expensive are they?
O, and tech_mister i'll try what you said l8er - got to go to skool now :(
So i'll try it when i get home .
I'll let u no
cheers
