| 63522 | 2002-07-19 08:35:00 | Running W 2000 prof. + McAfee Security center and Spamkiller. US Robotic V90, 56K does not log onto Xtra or if it does runs too slow to be useful. Problem has arisen lately. Phoneline OK. New problem seems to be caused by O/S. Laptop logs on OK. |

| 63523 | 2002-07-19 08:47:00 | McAfee has a built in firewall, have you tried stopping it? Double click on the "shield" symbol in the taskbar, and then "select a task" from the dialog box that will appear (Assuming McAffee 6.x here) Select the 4th button down to configure the firewall settings, then click the bottom button to stop McAfee. See if that helps, also advise if it has worked and what may have changed on your system to stop it. When you say that the laptop works I assume that it is not using the same modem, also is the modem internal or external? |

| 63525 | 2002-07-19 10:21:00 | McAfee type firewalls are very hardware dependant as are most internal modems. Just because the laptop works with similar software is quite irrelevant, as the hardware underlying it is radically different. Given that its only one PC that you have a problem with, and it happened without reason, have you suspected the modem? It should be a reasonable quality modem being a 3Com/US Robotics but they are all easily killed by any spikes on the line or electrical storms. Beware cheap internal modems however if you do need to replace it, ask for a hardware modem (which will probably need to be external). Modern "soft" modems are notorious for giving problems. Without the model number its not possible to tell if yours is a hardware or software modem. |

| 63526 | 2002-07-19 19:41:00 | Thanks for your input. No modem seems OK as an external Dynalink produced the same problem. Firewall not installed. It seems to be definitely in the computer/McAfee. They upgrade automatically and the Shield is now a Security Center. Big red M. Have tried with Spamkiller uninstalled ... no joy either. I am trying to contact McAfee but the FAQ yield no clues. Email is automated. Will have to keep trying to get a tech. Dot |
