| 64121 | 2002-07-21 22:59:00 | I have just bought a new computer with the modem preinstalled and sometimes after disconnecting from the internet when I want to reconnect the modem doesn't work and I get the error message of 'No dial tone" or no modem available and it appears to have turned off I then have to turn off the computer, disconnect the modem and wait then restart the computer with the modem plugged into the telephone line any reasons for this or fixes? |

| 64122 | 2002-07-21 23:51:00 | It seems that its a rare event today that an internal modem works as designed... Most modems are "soft modems" also known as "winmodems" and have no self contained processor like external serial hardware modems. They appear to be higly reliant on software and hardware configuarations and are easily upset. But they are cheap and so are used. Firsly if its a new PC see if the supplier will fix the problem and don't void your warranty. Otherwise as a start, identify exactly what make and model it is, and download and install the latest drivers for it. No guarantees of course. One solution would be to return it to the supplier for a credit and use that towards purchase of a serial external modem (not USB, they are the same as what you have often). Rest assured you are in good company...I tossed mine ages ago. |
