64017 2002-07-21 04:49:00 Hi,
I am using Opera 6.2 which I like especially the pop up ad killer. I have heard that some sites don't recognise Opera. I have occasionally been getting a box that comes up & says "cannot locate remote server" Is that when it is not recognised? I was going to get rid of IE but not yet.
Thanks
Pauline.

64018 2002-07-21 05:11:00 keep IE its sometimes more compatible with some site so dont discard it just yet kiwibeat (304)
64019 2002-07-21 05:25:00 Generally it means that there is no 'connection' between your ISP and server the site is on.

If you're worried, you can set Opera do identify itself as IE. This should minimise compatibilty problems.

Note: Every good web designer knows not to optimise a site for any particular browser.

64020 2002-07-21 10:49:00 Thanks for that but how do you change settings so that sites will recognise Opera? Pauline (641)
64021 2002-07-21 13:22:00 It's not really a matter of sites recognising Opera. It's a matter of what is in the code.

For example, one can design a web page to included a style sheet, which is a separate set of instructions on how the page should look. A lot of these styles on work with one browser or other. An example is setting the colour of scroll bars. You will only (currently) see coloured scrollbars in IE.

Poor web design results from the designer assuming that all visitors are going to be using a certain browser, and thus designing the page or site around that browser. This is very common with IE. A lot of designers read 'facts' like '85% of surfers use IE' and decide that all their visitors are going to be using IE. Some nefarious sites may also include code that shuts out particular browsers. IE incidentally, is the worst for this.

Don't worry about it too much. I can tell you as an Internet Engineer :D that no browser is fully compatible with all web sites.

You can press ALT-P to get the preferences window open in Opera, click on Network and at the top you'll see Browser Identification. Change this from Opera to IE (or Mozilla) if you are having problems getting into a particular site.

I have left mine at Opera and so far, have yet to encounter any problems.

64022 2002-07-21 22:22:00 or . . . just press f12 and there are a few quick change options there . The one I like the best is the ability to turn pop up windows off and on with ease .

ditto what the others say, keep IE but you will find Opera so much easy to use especially if you use the keyboard options .

Go here ( . opera . com/support/mastering/" target="_blank">www . opera . com) if you haven't already to find out more .

64023 2002-07-22 09:21:00 Thanks guys for your help. I only started using Opera last week so it's taking a bit of getting used to with different names for things, but am liking what I see with it so far. I guess the more I use it the better I will get. It is so good not to have 'page cannot be displayed' or 'an error has occured do you wish to debug'
Pauline.
