2002-07-21 04:48:00 | I heard this morning on the news that xtra is starting a new system (a world first) that will scan every email that moves in or out of their network for all virus. (the service will start Tuseday) how can this be a world first? hotmail have been scaning for years and yahoo mail is the same. Ihug have been runnig ISPY for about a year. and often in the news you get reports of a new virus that are said to be getting stoped by xtra at a rate of 100s per day..... haveing the ISP scan your emal is NOT new. also i have a feeling that a service like this will actualy make people say "I dont need to have a virus scanner any more because my ISP will save me" this could be a problem because you have to trust your ISP has checked your email with CURRENT virus scanner programs. I don't want this to be a rant about XTRA or any other ISP. I just have to ask where do the news boys get there info about what is a world first and what is not.

2002-07-21 05:03:00 | Hi, I have made a posting about this further down....... What I think is different, is that all emails (in and out of Xtra) will be scanned, and if an infected virus is found, it will be cleaned and deleted...... An email (with full details of the virus) will then be sent to the person who SENT the email, and to the RECIPIENT, telling them what has occured. This may not be new - although non of the others bother with the notification emails - but you have to admit that Telecom deserve major praise for this. BALDY

2002-07-21 19:35:00 | as far as i know IHUG ave had the ISPY service for about a year and it does exactly the same as XTRA's new system. The ihug version sends email's to both parties about the virus. BTW any comments as to my thoughts about people getting slackabout virus problems just because "my ISP is scanning my email so i am safe"

2002-07-21 22:35:00 | I was wondering how they were going to cover-up the installation of "Carnivore" servers in our local ISP's. This is a pretty good way to explain those extra servers away and its even half true. They do handle email after all (Carnivore servers) and all the Xtra employees will probably believe thats what they are (Virus scanners). I wonder how XTRA will explain the guys in trenchcoats who come and change the harddrives every 2 days in the new virus scanners to their employees?? | John Grieve (367) | |
2002-07-22 01:39:00 | Hi robsonde, There maybe some that will think that all they need is the Xtra scanning - but that is what some people use the internet solely for - sending emails, and a bit of surfing. I know someone (who shall remain nameless) who spends a considerable amount of time on the internet using a VERY expensive computer WITHOUT ANY virus protection. All he does is run the Housecall scanner everyday. This guy is a computer tech as well.

2002-07-22 02:42:00 | Maybe the diff. is that Xtra are doing it for free? As I understand Ihug charge for the service, and we all know that MS [Hotmail] use one of the crappest Virus scanning systems the world has ever known. About 80% of viruses still get through to my inbox.. | honeylaser (814) | |
2002-07-22 02:57:00 | yes baldy i know plenty of people who do things that way to. "my pc goes faster...." "i've never had a virus....." and when they get one that toasts ther pc its....... "those @#$%$%&$ &#&^& should be @%$&$#* up the @%#^$ *......" 9 times out of 10 they will install virus progs and do their updates. :^O
