| 64150 | 2002-07-22 21:05:00 | Hi Smurf, thanks for the feedback. I originally tried this tip out on a win95B set up which Im still running as a backup computer (said 95C in error in the other post). The major updates I can remember are DUN 1.3, Winsock2, and IE 5.5, there would have been others over the years from when it was supported by MS. The other system just a few weeks ago was a Win95C fresh install with those same updates on a friends pentium 120. Disk Cleanup also worked on that. Now this is where my memory failed me in a post above. I didnt have the 'couldnt find shlwapi.dll file message'; moving cleanmrg.exe to c:\windows was all that was necessary. I was a bit confused with transplanting sfc.exe, which did require other files to be extracted. Perhaps you could let me know which version of IE you are running. Win95B had IE3, and Win95C had IE4 I cant easily test this out again, as the old 486 I have doesnt have a CD drive. I shall have to get a better test machine, to test these tips out in all sorts of conditions, but if they only work under certain situations, then that wouldnt be very good. |

| 64152 | 2002-07-22 23:43:00 | Well, Smurf, I've been worrying away at this and a little light has emerged. At a guess, Id say you are running IE6 on your Win98, and maybe IE 3 or just possibly IE4 on your Win95? On the Win95C disk there are 2 shlwapi.dll files, one is the same as for win95B, the other, a later version, is in the IE4_3.CAB folder (which is a cab within a cab). So there is a very strong suggestion from whats gone before that there are other files also associated with IE needed to get cleanmgr.exe to work in Win95. When we get to Win98SE, which has IE5, the version number for shlwapi is 5.0....., but when IE 5 is upgraded to 5.5, the version number changes to 5.5.... That's why Im guessing you have IE 6 in your Win98 as you say your version of shlwapi is 6.0........ But IE6 wont install on Win95, the highest version is 5.5. The evidence suggests that you need to update Win95 to run IE5.5 in order for Disk Cleanup to work. It does after all need to know where the temporary internet files are located, and there was a big change between IE3 and later versions. I may be able to test this theory out if I can find a spare hard drive to load win95 on, but preferably another test-bed machine. |

| 64153 | 2002-07-23 01:00:00 | Thanks Terry for your thoughts and replies. You are quite correct re my Windows98 machine, I am running IE 6. My Windows 95 is on an old 486 laptop. The version of Windows 95 seems to be 4.00.950 so hence the incompatibility of the shlwapi.dll file. My old laptop hasn't even got IE of any version on it as it doesn't have a modem:) Probably about time I did something about that! Thanks for your perseverence in getting to the bottom of it |

| 64154 | 2002-07-23 01:32:00 | Hi Karen, by now you will be thoroughly confused with these postings. Here is a site which offers a free disk cleaner. I havent tried it, but it sounds ok, and does very much more anyway than Disk Cleanup from Win98. http://diskcleaner.tripod.com/ Cheers |
