2002-07-22 00:32:00 | Re Your article in April 2002. Step 5 Sweep out unneeded files. I don't have the "Disk Cleanup" under my System Tools ( currently use Windows 95). Should I have this, if so how do I access it. | Karen (1152) | |

2002-07-22 02:13:00 | If you know someone who has Win98, ask them if you can copy the file cleanmgr.exe from their c:\windows folder. It will fit on a floppy. Copy it into your c:\windows, and make a shortcut to the program on your desktop, or wherever. Call it Disk Cleanup. It will now work in Win95 the same way as it does in Win98. | Terry Porritt (14) | |

2002-07-22 05:37:00 | Hi Terry, Thanks for your suggestion re Copying cleanmgr.exe from Windows 98. Before Karen tries this perhaps you could comment: I tried this on my Windows 95 system to find that you also needed to copy the SHLWAPI.DLL and place it in the Windows/System folder. Clean Manager then opened but came up with an error msg -ERROR Opening Volume Cache Key. As a consequence, Clean Manager would not scan for files that could be cleaned up. Have you any solution to this? Cheers Smurf

2002-07-22 06:44:00 | Thanks Smurf, I'd forgotten all about the shlwapi.dll. It is required to be copied over, or extracted from a win98 CD. There is a bit of a mystery here. The diskcleanup works perfectly on my win95C backup computer, thats why I posted the tip originally a little while ago. On an 486 test-bed with the same OS but a very basic installation, I get the same error message as you describe. There may be another file missing. So until the answer to this is found, this tip will have to be put on the back-burner. Sorry about that.

2002-07-22 07:53:00 | Not really any further forward on this, but I think that whether this transplant works depends on the upgrades and updates that have been made to Win95, including maybe Internet Explorer. The version of shlwapi.dll on my Win95 setup that works ok is 5.5.4807.2300, and is the same as on my Win98 computer, whereas the version on the Win98SE upgrade disk is 5.00.2614.350 and is 2 years older. So I'm not sure now where the later version came from, except it must have been from a program update. However that isnt the whole story as putting the later version onto the 486 with basic win95 still doesnt get the disk cleanup going.
