64393 2002-07-23 10:14:00 Well I got myself a D-Link 560e the other day and it's great so far, apart from E3 being the ISP.

Got it from Ascent (http://www.ascent.co.nz) for ~$150 to the door.

64394 2002-07-23 10:15:00 I should have mentioned that it has both serial and parallel connections. -=JM=- (16)
64395 2002-07-23 11:18:00 Thanks godfather :x, guess where hubby is going tomorrow?! :D

For a trade card anyway. We're often buying things at DSE. *Susan rubs hands together with glee*

Back to the research, then decision time..... :O

JM: thanks for that info ;-)

64396 2002-07-23 12:06:00 I agree that external modems are more reliable and efficient than internal PCI soft modems but they are in common use and operating reasonably well for most people and there is no reason why yours should not as well unless you are on a very bad rural connection.

If you are sure you are actually connected with your modem and still getting no traffic here are some things to consider.

Delete your Dialup connection and set up a new one as they can get corrupted.

If you add some extra settings to the Extra Initialization settings box in your modem properties this could solve the problem by making the connection more stable.

Anti-virus software has been known to cause this problem, especially those that have a firewall included. Try disabling antivirus to check it is not interfering.

Another one I have seen is Enable software compression not ticked which has caused a no traffic problem even though it is enabled by default normally.
Start/Connect to/ show all connections
Right click on connection icon and select Properties
Click on Networking and select Settings
Make sure Enable LCP extensions and Enable software compression are both ticked.

Another cause of no traffic can be caused by a program called NEWDOTNET
It can be installed with out the users knowledge with various programs.

64397 2002-07-23 12:29:00 Thanks for replying..I was worried this topic had become changed too much and I wouldn't get anymore responses, so anyway..
It's not new.net, as my ad aware is up to date and i'm ad-free. also, i checked my add/remove programs to be sure, and it's not there.
And yes, I'm sure I am connected.
I haven't tried delete and reinstalling the connection..I did do that once before for something else, I don't know why I didn't think of that, so I'll try that.
Software compression is enabled, but I haven't tried it with the antivirus shut down, problem with that is it only happens when it feels like it.
And about the Extra Initialization settings although i cant find any box with that exact name, i've combed through the settings, and as far as i can see they're all good.
But I guess I'll try with the reinstalling first and then go from there.
Thanks again. -Nk.

64398 2002-07-23 12:52:00 For Win XP
Start/ control panels/ phone and modem options
Click on Modem tab and then Properties
Click on Modem tab and change Max port speed to 38400
Click on Advanced
In the Extra initialization commands box enter +MS=V34
Click OK and OK again
Restart the computer

This will slow the modem to 33k but it will confirm if it is improving your connection.
If it works try increasing the speed with +MS=v90,,,,48000
Change the port speed to 57600
If it causes a problem at 48000 try 44000 or 40000 until you can get a reliable connection.
