| 64307 | 2002-07-22 08:56:00 | I was wondering if you could recommend a good PCI graphics card, cost and performance wise. My system is a Compaq Presario 2281, with a Cyrix 333MHz (HAHAHA) CPU and 96 MB of ram. And just lately I have noticed with the demands that I am placing on the PC, the graphics system is just not coping. I am what you would call an occasional gamer, so I think that I would only need 16 MB (unless 32MB is cheaper!). So I would like it to have 3D capabilities as well as good 2D capabilities. My current set up is a onboard grahics chipset (4MB), so I guess so info about how to possibly disable this would also be good. Also I was thinking that the card would need a fan as well to help with cooling. Any help is appreciated | othothemaddwarf (1161) | ||
| 64308 | 2002-07-22 09:15:00 | there are a number of solutions around for PCI graphics that might do the trick for you. I know G-Force comes as a PCI card and some shops might have a voodoo III 2000 PCI card the bad news is that you whole system is a bit behind the 8 ball. a better graphics card will only go as fast as the system lets it. what games do you want to play?? remember a good PCI graphics card might set you back $300 or a full system upgrade for $900-$1200 |

| 64310 | 2002-07-23 04:31:00 | you should still be able to get a pci tnt m64 (which is only slightly overkill for your system) for around about ~$150 | tweak'e (174) | ||
| 64311 | 2002-07-23 05:05:00 | To disable the on-board video: Compaq (and IBM) are pretty good about having a label inside the box (on the inside of the lid for desktops) with a map showing the position of any jumpers to do things like disabling video. If there is not a jumper, it will be a BIOS setting. | Graham L (2) | ||
