1307510 2012-10-18 20:08:00 I have a Compaq Pressario 2500 whose HDD failed and was replaced by a new HDD. It was totally stuffed !

I purchased a said to be a "Full Version", of Windows 95 which I took to be a new installation disk. I need 95 or 98 to
connect my telescope to the computer. However nothing happened, it just said "no operating system found".

Subsequently, the seller nor trademe are prepared to help out.

Just wondering if there is some one out there who knows of a way to still install Windows 95 from the disk I have.

1307511 2012-10-18 20:25:00 I assume that you inserted the '95 CD into the drive and tried to boot from that? You need to get into the BIOS and check that the boot sequence has the CD/DVD as first boot device. Have you done that? linw (53)
1307512 2012-10-18 20:33:00 You'll more than likely need a boot Floppy to allow it to install. Have to look up the instructions again - been a while :) wainuitech (129)

I have now, CD/DVD was second on a list of 4. I could not move it up the order, so I highlighted it and pressed enter.

But still got the message , no operating system found. But it won't find an OS as its a new HDD.

1307514 2012-10-18 21:12:00 The Windows 95 CD isn't bootable, you'll need to boot from a floppy to install it. pcuser42 (130)
1307515 2012-10-18 22:36:00 You need a dos boot floppy with CDrom drivers, a right pain in the butt. Another method I used to use was to make the HDD bootable from a floppy disk - forget the command, then copy the contents of the CD onto the hdd and run setup from the win95 folder. A little hard to achieve in your situation but it makes life easier

I have an original 95 Disk and book floating around here somewhere you can have if you're anywhere near Hamilton.

1307517 2012-10-19 06:29:00 With your computer turned off, insert the boot disk.

Turn on the computer.
When the computer's booted up do the following...

type FDISK /MBR hit enter
(this destroys the master boot record and re-creates it. You should not see anything on the screen.)

type FORMAT C: /U /S hit enter
(this will format your hard drive and "SYS" it. This means install the system files needed to boot up. When it's done you may enter a name for this drive if you wish.)

Reboot the computer with the boot disk.

Type C: hit enter

Type MD CABS hit enter

Type X: hit enter
(where "X" is the drive letter for your CD-ROM make sure your Win95 CD is in the CD-ROM drive!)

Type CD WIN95 hit enter

Type COPY *.* C:\CABS hit enter
(what you've done is, you've made a folder called "cabs" on your hard drive, then copied all the files needed from your Win95 CD-ROM to that folder. This way you will install from your hard drive. Then, in the future if Win95 needs any files, it will automatically get them from there. Also I've found that some people have a problem getting their CD-ROM to be recognized by Win95. If that were to happen during the Win95 installation, you wouldn't be able to finish the install. This method avoids this problem.)

Reboot the computer without the boot disk. NOTE: If you're using an upgrade CD to do the install, skip step 10, and start the install while you're booted off the bootdisk, this way you will have CD-ROM support when Windows wants proof. At that point simply put your Win9x CD in, point to it in the browser, then put your install CD back in. Remember to remove the boot disk before the next reboot!

Type CD CABS hit enter

Type SETUP hit enter
(here you go! just follow the on-screen instructions and (hopefully *grin*) you will successfully install Win95!)

Method two

With your computer turned off, insert the boot disk.

Turn on the computer.
When the computer's booted up do the following...

Type FDISK /MBR hit enter
(this destroys the master boot record and re-creates it. You should not see anything on the screen.)

Type FORMAT C: /U hit enter
(this will format your hard drive when it's done you may enter a name for this drive if you wish.)

Reboot the computer with the boot disk.

Type X: hit enter
(where "X" is the drive letter for your CD-ROM)

Type CD WIN95 hit enter

Type SETUP hit enter
(and away you go. follow the on-screen instructions and good luck.)

This goes back a bit but wasn't that from the a:\> prompt type sys c:. That is assuming that the floppy was already a DOS boot disk since the command copied command.com and two hidden files onto the target (io.sys and msdos.sys).
