1307400 2012-10-18 00:44:00 My old LaserJet 1300 was caught in a power cut and now refuses to start. It is showing all three status lights hard on, which according to the manual is a "fatal error". I've done all the recommended things - unplugged for 5 minutes, removed the cartridge etc etc but nothing has worked.

At its age I'm certainly not planning to spend any money on it, so before I take it to the e-waste collection, has anyone any other ideas how I might kick it into life?

1307401 2012-10-18 04:04:00 Sorry, there is no magic fix . You will need to spend $$ to fix it. (or just bin it)

There is probably a 2nd level error code you need to trace the issue further

I've been thinking about getting a colour printer for ages, so perhaps now is the time to do it.

I've found an HP service manual online, so I might see if I can get anything from that, but I'm not hopeful.

1307404 2012-10-18 07:11:00 1300n with no networking...you sure about that one?

Sounds like the formatter board or power board is dead, either way it won't be worth fixing.

The service manual and also something I found in another forum talked about an "engine test switch" that if you press it prints a page with diagnostics on it. I tried that and got not a thing. 1307406 2012-10-19 20:58:00 Wonders never cease. The printer has revived itself. I had the side cover off looking for the engine test switch, which appeared to have had no effect,, as it was still showing the same error lights. I put it back together before taking it out to the garage to add to the "for e-waste disposal" pile, and - just in case - powered it on. I had done this before with no success. Well b****r me, it powered up, and showed normal lights. I tried a test page and it worked! I have also since then done some urgent printing with no problem. I had seen reference in another forum to someone who had had the same experience, but I was not expecting it.

I still think it is probably time for a new printer, (this one dates to July 2003) but at least I can take my time looking for a decent one rather than having to rush out and buy something with no research.
