1283757 2012-06-25 01:50:00 Guess this is going to take some time, even on an i5 @ 3.5ghz

Lucky the other 30k are already mp3......

1283758 2012-06-25 03:41:00 You probably know this but converting form one lossy format to another is not the best Idea, there is always some loss of quality.
Unless of course the WMAs were lossless. I've done WMA lossless to MP3 on an i5 and it seemed incredibly fast, but it was only one album :)

Yeah, im no audiophobe, but most is at bitrate of 192 or better, however I cant stream WMA, and itunes doesnt like WMA either, so no choice really.....up to 2500, so getting there..

Been there - done it too. Several times now as a matter of fact.

WMP will delete or damage your files if it's allowed to see to them after they are converted. If you convert to MP3, then WMP thinks they are bootlegged and will tell you - as it has done to me several times now - that your file is not legally useable and it damages it so no player can access or play it thereafter.

It must be a digital sig somewhere that WMP looks for, but in the conversion to MP3, that gets left off and M$ assumes you are pirating the music. Who knows if it is also telling the music cops too and you can expect a knock at midnight.

When you do make the MP3s, put them into a folder (at least) that WMP cannot find and NEVER allow WMP to cruise through your computer looking for files and entries in that ADD NEW FILES choice ever again.

I hadda point WMP at a folder with the legacy WMA files that come on the installation disc - you know: that junk that Windows thinks is great (read: free) to them.

The real MP3s are now on an archiving USB type backup drive that I keep physically and electronically separate from my internal HDDs. WMP can go blind looking for them as far as I am concerned.

It seems to me - and this is just speculation here but my experiences show some consistency and from that I can draw to a conclusion, that going from WMP9 to WMP10 or WMP11, triggers this "search-for-illegal-and-then-possibly: destroy" - your non-sig'd music files.

I can't read the M$ code to be sure, but that's the results that I assume are a nasty reality.

Upsidedown Land may have somewhat different results and may even be exempt for the nonce, but this seems to be a global happening, as the US goes, so goeth the rest of the world according to the desires of the RIAA, MPA and other blood sucking leeches.

BTW: I totally loathe AIMP3, and VMP as they are nowhere near as nice as WMP - and if someone can point me to a better player and ripper, then I'd be eternally grateful and will put a whole case of beer on ice awaiting their arrival here in Montana. There be steaks too.

AND - I'm somewhat happy at a 128 bitrate at my age.

1283761 2012-06-25 22:28:00 VLC Media Player ... HERE (www.videolan.org) ... not much to look at, but plays about every format you throw at it. SP8's (9836)
1283762 2012-06-25 23:03:00 media player classic does what I want. I ripped my own CD's originally to wmp format converted to mp3 and never had any issues. Since re ripped them as .flac and not ever going back to mp3 its rubbish by comparison gary67 (56)
1283763 2012-06-25 23:04:00 I have a fairly large MP3 collection and WMP doesn't bother it at all despite them all being in the library. It must be the conversion process or something that triggered your problems. Mine are mostly ripped from CD direct to MP3 using WMP (despite it's default settings it does MP3 quite well). I also always make sure to turn off the copy protect feature of WMP in the ripping settings.

I have now duplicated the whole collection as lossless WMA for a few reasons even though my ears are usually happy with 128 as well.
1. As a backup of my CDs, after a few have been lost or stolen I like the security of having a full quality backup
2. Even at 250+ CDs the lossless collection is <90GB which is nothing these days, why compress things just for the sake of it?
3. I would use Flac except I can't be bothered convincing windows media centre to use them the way it natively does with WMA and lossless is lossless
4. Continues 3, I like Media centre for it's ease of use with a media centre remote without any setup hassles.
5. I checked first, if lossless WMA becomes a problem it's easily converted to Flac or MP3.

I have repeatedly lost 2500 and more MP3s at a swipe from WMP and it killing the files for any further use.

Instead, I have just loaded them onto an outside hdd and not labeled them as music files. AND I learned to NEVER accept an 'update' to WMP - it means it wants to change to a newer version and that seems to set the whole thing off and goes to hell in a handbasket.

Question: Does Media Player Classic develop a menu like WMP? I really like the WMP list of all the music - but so far, all I've seen of VLC and AIMP3 works poorly.

1283765 2012-06-26 04:21:00 SJ - Latest media player has the list of all music via artist, album and song...I like WMP as it shows the album art as well, and well, its looks pretty cool to scroll 2500 albums with art...! Its slow until WMP has updated the meta data etc......most of the time you have to use the search function, but then, i forget what I have!, so I just ask mates to thin of a band or artist and go from there. 1283766 2012-06-26 06:12:00 If backing to numerous CD's you may want a software catalogue utility. Disclib (www.lyrasoftware.com) may come in handy to easily reference CD's to quickly search what tracks are on each CD. kahawai chaser (3545)
