1307627 2012-10-21 04:21:00 Update: when you take a system image file, the instructions note that an earlier system image may be overwritten if the media runs out of space - it was an external 500GB drive I was using, of which 85GB was used and over 400GB was free.

As a precaution, I took a copy of the earlier system image and changed its name. I then created a new system image (which is what I want to restore back to, after retrieving the lost *.pst file from the earlier system image). At the end of the creation of the new system image, despite having over 300GB of space left on the external drive, the earlier system image was overwritten.

(By changing the names of the system image files, I did manage to achieve what I wanted to do as per earlier post - thanks to having kept a copy of my earlier system image under a different name).
