1307563 2012-10-19 09:51:00 PartedMagic is one of the best in my opinion. Lots of tools - not all are available from the GUI (e.g. NT password resetter). I use unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) to make the bootable pen drive. johnd (85)

[Mod's comment: you may have not realised that boot utility you recommended also contains pirated software. This is against the forum rules so I have removed your post - Jen]

1307566 2012-10-20 01:07:00 Thanks, will try those out.

Linux, I'm a bit unfamiliar with so I installed the XP install disk on the USB however it looks like I need the sata drivers and the program asks for it via floppy.

1307567 2012-10-20 04:01:00 Here's one that should remove infections (windows.microsoft.com). Didn't even know this existed. Its probably similar to the Kaspersky / AVG Rescue CD

The download is small, then you run either the 32 or 64 bit file. And you can either create an ISO (looks like the 32 bit ISO is about 244 mb), or put it on a USB flash drive

1307568 2012-10-20 12:36:00 The next thing I've tried is Hirens' BootCD 15.1 and followed the directions on hiren.info site.
I can boot to Hirens' bootcd program and Grub4dos but I can't get the menu.lst.
The Hirens CD I burned works OK however, but is no help as the notebook has no cd drive.
The hirens tools selection looks good so if I can solve the mystery...

Am hoping another laptop here will boot from USB so I can eliminate possibilities. Will try tomorrow

1307569 2012-10-20 18:46:00 My comments in a previously edited post seems to have gone un-noticed.

Hiren's BootCD 15.1 includes mini-XP which is pirated software. If you require help with this application then you cannot ask here as it is against the forum rules.

1307570 2012-10-20 22:07:00 Thanks. I hadn't re-read the previous posts. Only now I see the comment and I have no wish to use pirated anything.

Ok, so next I'll give partedmagic a go.

1307572 2012-10-20 23:44:00 Partedmagic worked and the disk tested bad, as was expected.
Unetbootin was easy to follow and no hiccups. Thanks to johnd

jcr1, now that looks very cool. Am going to have to try this out. The ability to have multiboot is a bonus.
