Lease the connection to neighbours at a cost. I'm sure you can make something off it, at the very least enough to cover expenses. Unless the terrain prevents WiFi

Thats something I have thought about and something I figure the community has thought about! The trick is getting chorus to splice us into the action. If it was so easy why had it not been done before now?

I read the suggestion of vodafone well you can forget that! Only way to get vodafone would be at least 150 metre Aerial of which I think DoC and the council might shout about resource consent. The neighbour is up the hill and still can not recieve vodafone there. It alll boils down to cost!

1283572 2012-06-24 08:57:00 Yea, we have fibre straight past our door, quoted $10,000 to hook into it! could then resell to our neighbours but big investment.

We currently feed 5 neighbours off our good wireless connection!

Satellite may be the only option.

1283573 2012-06-24 09:09:00 Its frustrating for sure. Tens of thousands of people cannot get wired broadband in New Zealand but you don't hear about it because the rest who do - don't care.

Hopefully the governments broadband plan will change that for most rural families.

1283575 2012-06-25 03:57:00 Rural but not that rural just happens to be more than 5kms from the nearest exchange. The terrain also prevents clear cellphone coverage. I need to investigate this further we may scrap in but I know a neighbour 500 metrs further up the road has difficulty with BB.

Sounds like a friend of mine, he can't even get dialup faster than 20kbps

1283576 2012-06-25 04:27:00 Broadband speedtest should be top of the list on any techies new house purchase... :groan:

Its a deal breaker really.

1283577 2012-06-25 09:00:00 Not all techies own their homes though, and some people have not much choice where they can rent. Still, the unavailability of bb is pretty shocking in a lot of places.

1283578 2012-06-25 23:35:00 Techies would find more work if more rural homes were able to access Broadband...think about that one. coldfront (15814)
