In general it's for high compression performance engines and if your car is not designed for it you are just throwing money away. A lot of people believe it's better and convince themselves their car needs it when it doesn't.
Not suggesting anyone here would be so foolish :) just taking the opportunity to point it out. An engine designed for 91 may in fact run considerably worse on 95.
Don't take car dealers advice on it either, if you want to know what's best for your car ask the manufacturers or their agents.

Good to see the price dip under $2 again but I don't pay much attention, making a special trip to fill up or travelling further to a service station that is cheaper will eat up any savings you might make on fuel anyway.
My car has a 60L tank, saving 5c-10c a litre = $3.00-$6.00 Nice if it happens to line up with when I'm filling up anyway but not worth going out of my way for.

A Toyota Camry and they use 95 Shell b/c they say it is a better quality and cleaner petrol. Yet I put 91 into European cars

Its a European make I have owned for 20 years and the lowest recomended grade of Fuel is 95 octane. Putting 91 in will shorten the cars life time real quick and yes putting 98 in will be a false economy as well.

Pretty much stuffs me up using discount dockets in Town because the BP there only does 98 or 91 hence use the Fuel Card at the more expensive GAS station at least I know I am paying City rates with the card and getting 95.

I have a couple of large hills to climb up and putting 91 in in is very noticeable. Those people who make the claims of being more efficant usually can not back it up with facts and proof. I can give you a spread sheet covering a few thousand kms running a Mitsi on 95 instead of the factory recommended 91 and the differance is hardly noticeable other than the cost.

1283207 2012-06-21 11:32:00 What happened to those negative nanas who said it will be $2.50 by mid year or better still the ones a few years back (2008) who predicted $5 per litre in a couple of years. coldfront (15814)
1283208 2012-06-21 11:50:00 What about those who say >$2 will the psychological barrier, yet for the time we spent >$2 people just drove as usual. Me not included cos my own car is regro on hold. Seems like little have changed. Nomad (952)

I am an AA member and have used that promotion once after 3 visits to Burgerking the AA promo is about as useful as a 4c or 6c supermarket docket to me compared to the saving on the national price (not the pump price) that the fuel card offers. Besides that most time putting in more than 50 litres!

Might disagree on that! I work in hospitality and tourism and we noticed few people doing less long trips and staying longer, duringthe winter season we also noticed less peope doing multiple day trips to the ski areas. That crossing the psychological barrier did have an eefcet. However what I find most amusing is those townies who complain about the fuel price filling up at the two most expensive servos in the North Island when they have enough fuel to get to the near normal prices they are used to. It it is quite amusing to listen to them bitching while they are filling up with fuel then complain about the price when they forget the locals pay that price nearly every time the go to that servo.

MOst people dont bother to look at the pump price but many habits influenced by thinking they are getting a good deal or what the media reports.

When I got my new car four or so years ago, European, it had a little sticker inside the fuel cap stating minimum of 95 but the book that came with the car stated minimum of 91!!

Just used 91 .
