| 1474438 | 2021-01-10 19:33:00 | Why are there so many against gene editing? We've been doing it for thousands of years, just not the way it's being done today. We have been cross pollinating plants and cross breeding animals, creating new plants and animals, for all this time and no one has objected so gene editing can't be all that different, can it? |

CRISPR technology is a simple yet powerful tool for editing genomes. It allows researchers to easily alter DNA sequences and modify gene function. Its many potential applications include correcting genetic defects, treating and preventing the spread of diseases and improving crops. The corona virus vaccine has used gene editing tools, so far as I know; there is strong resistance from overseas female medical staff to taking the vaccine because they want to wait and see the long-term effects which are not known yet because they are worried about being able to get pregnant in the future. |

Not as much as you might think: www.bbc.com www.pnas.org Throughout evolutionary history vi ruses and bacteria have been shuttling DNA between organisms of every sort. |

There's: Mistrust of scientists in general (which seems way out of proportion to me in a lot of people) Paranoia that eating genetically modified food will have some kind of effect on you The concern that modified crops will contaminate existing crops and they will no longer exist if we find we need to go back a step to the original. The Idea that we are "playing god" without knowing what the repercussions might be And those are just a few off the top of my head without much effort. Not my view I'm all for gene science as long as sufficient care is taken. Something for the anti GM food brigade to consider is that in order for the world to stop using the modified crops and for everyone to eat the healthy organic diet that we so often hear about we'd either have to convert all spare land on the planet to farms getting rid of all natural habitats, or we'd have to start culling a huge amount of the human population off the planet. We have long passed the point were we could feed the population without genetically modified crops. A Chinese researcher, He Jiankui, was subjected to social pressure, because he claimed (at the Second International Summit on Human Genome Editing) that he had managed to edit the genes of 2 human embryos. |

Monsanto have a monopoly on producing hybrid seeds and they are behind the push, in some countries they already have enough sway to have had laws passed making it illegal to collect seeds from crops. | gary67 (56) | ||
