64493 2002-07-23 04:44:00 Hi. Well I didn't get any useful response to my previous post regarding h/w compatibility, but hopefully someone will be able to answer this one...

I've just got a couple of quotes for my new puter, and the motherboard I'm looking at has a couple of USB 2 ports. Will my old USB device(s) be able to run through them? Naturally I looked at my recent PC World issues, but couldn't find an absolute answer.

Also, all other things being equal, is their a majot benefit in paying extra for a hard drive that's ATA 130, over a 100?

Thanks for any accurate information.

ps - is there a file/catalogue on PCWorld that databases all the contents of the PCWorld CD's? It would be awesome if the F1 helpfiles and the disks' contents could be included in a searchable file that we could install and update locally.

64494 2002-07-23 04:56:00 Yes your old devices will be able to work, and USB 2 is Backward Compatible.

Sorry I don't know about Ata 130 and ATA 100

Check out this article. www17.tomshardware.com

But in a nutshell probably not. "The Hi-Speed USB 2.0 logo is used to show that the device will function correctly with other devices that carry the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 logo."

About the hard-drive query, I am not sure.

Hope this helps.

64496 2002-07-23 05:23:00 i think u mean ata133 :)

the 133 stands for 133MB/s speed frm hardrive to motherboard. it is NOT the speed from the actual hardrive disks to the rest of the pc.

an ata100 drive will loose a little in burst speed ie from the hardrive cashe to motherboard but will be the same speed from the actuall disk as an ata133 drive. generally speaking at the currant hardrive speeds there is no great difference between them.

it depends a little bit on what exact hardrive you are looking at getting. eg 5400rpm or 7000rpm 2meg cache or 8 meg cache. i wouldn't pay extra just to have ata133.

64497 2002-07-25 06:31:00 Thanx. 7200rpm actually ;)

Not sure what size the cache is - I'll have to open it up when it arrives and measure it.

64498 2002-07-25 06:51:00 Don't bother paying extra for ATA133, you see little increase in performance compared to ATA100.
I read in a article a while back that ATA 133 was invented by Maxtor as a sort of Advertising gimick. Has anyone else wondered why other HDD companies don't make many, or none at all ATA 133 HDD's
