64858 2002-07-24 10:50:00 Hi Loser

I had similar problems when I started using computers. My right wrist and hand froze up completely.

I fixed it by using a gel wrist support and also by lowering my mouse pad off my desktop so that my forearm, wrist and hand were in a straight and horizontal line. To get my mouse that low, I opened the second drawer of my desk, put a sheet of ply on top and put the mouse pad on that.

If you have to reach up to the desktop to use your mouse you are guaranteed to have problems, as you also will if your keyboard is on the desktop as well. I use a keyboard tray too and both keyboard and mouse are at the same level.

Get the ergonomics right and most problems will go away.

If damage has already been done, think about a giant ball-mouse that sits still. That might suit you better.

Cheers

First destination, doctors on campus for a checkup and some advice...

64860 2002-07-24 11:59:00 Hi loser,

The following url points to a Vertical Mouse (www.3m.com) of a type a friend of mine who is a graphics artist/designer swears by (as opposed to swearing at/about).

They are available here in NZ for approx $100 inc GST. I think Ascent have them Ascent (http://www.ascent.co.nz/)

Cheers, Babe.

64861 2002-07-24 12:00:00 Much of it is common sense. A friend at work one day asked my advice (seeing as how I'd worn the wrist brace for a while). Her problem was the reception phone, a numb finger and a painful elbow. I instantly spotted the cause. The phone cord wasn't long enough and she was reaching for it.

Having spotted a longer phone cord in the file server room we installed it that night and split the 2 halves of the phone around the keyboard. Also general advice about ergonomics of keyboards.

By no longer having to reach for the phone and using a pen to push extension buttons - problem solved overnight.

If you're using campus computers a lot learn the adjustments and adjust the set up each time you use the computers. Most students don't.

64862 2002-07-24 12:05:00 being an avid gamer i get simaler probs. the ridges made where the two halves of the mouse join together causes some serious grief after long periods of gameing. also because my hand sits next to the edge of the desk i can end up with cuts on the wrist from the edge of the desk.

just a matter of setting the chair to the right height and not play games for 8 hours straight :)

64863 2002-07-24 22:21:00 Hi Loser

Just a quick update to my earlier post, prompted by the advice from (Dr Henry) Crunn. (Good friend of Minnie Bannister no doubt).

For "wrist rest" read "heel of hand". I never rested my wrist on the gel pad because that made matters worse, for reasons I didn't understand at the time but have now been explained.

It is also a good idea to tweak up your mouse movements so that you can cover the whole of the screen with just small finger movements. My cursor goes from top of screen to bottom or from one side to the other with just over 1 cm of mouse movement. The settings are speed and acceleration, and I also enable "smart move" which jumps the cursor to the OK button (on the basis that the majority of times you will want to OK the move).

Cheers

64864 2002-07-25 12:16:00 Did you see the Doctors? Did they help?

Ergonomics. For really good ergonomics - watch the star wars battle type movies. How many hi-tech space craft pilots move a lot, reach for things and twist and turn?

Answer: None. Seated comfortably, no neck strain, a twitch of a finger and the space craft rolls, a flick of the thumb and the guns are armed.

Set your computer up for total comfort and you're away.

Incidentally, wrists should skim wrist supports rather than rest on them when typing. You rest on them between the keystrokes (Interesting the things you find in manuals).

64866 2002-07-26 12:28:00 Doc gave me some "literature" -- a booklet on correct posture, etc and a sheet with some exercises to do periodically.
Also said that wearing a wrist brace while sleeping should help to relieve pain, but said it might be a little hard to use it while mousing! Said he could prescribe some anti-inflammitories (spelling?) to which I said "no thank you".
Advised me to think about investing in a lighter (read "optical") mouse.

Thanks everyone for advice, concern etc....

64867 2002-07-26 12:35:00 Use it PARTICULARLY when mousing! It makes you think about what you are doing .

If you don't like the idea of drugs - try homeopathics . Only took them for a couple of days and the worst was over . Don't know if it was them or a combination of things .
