64677 2002-07-23 14:54:00 What the error message - if any?

Some causes include a corrupt image file,
An incorrectly set up BIOS
Restoring an image to a drive that is smaller than the image
Restoring a drive image to a partition without resizing the image

However, the error message or a better description than the chief ingredient of a toilet bowl could get you help.

64678 2002-07-23 22:26:00 I use Nero and have had no problems - it is very easy to use but has one proviso. It copies your entire c drive, so even if you have 1gb of programs but a 30g hd, you need a lot of cd's. My solution. Used Partition Magic so c portion is 2.38gb - fits on to 4 cd's - to restore - boot from floppy and basicly type in restore. Hope this helps

64679 2002-07-24 09:27:00 Norton ghost seems to be the best software. I believe your xp is in NTFS? You'll have to restore the image from DOS using the right switches to load up the image in NTFS. It is a pain when it comes to NTFS. I hate it myself, it's only good for security and fault tolerance, other than that it stinks when it comes to DOS.

Another tip, you can not resize your xp partition if you're going to load your image on it. Xp like win2k, have this feature that checks your ram, hardware info, hard disk partition info (size). If any of these have changed, it will not run properly or not run at all.

64680 2002-07-24 09:33:00 Hi Tingle

There is no good reason why you should be unable to restore from a Ghost or Drive Image backup. Firstly, were you trying evaluation copies of these programs? They don't always let you carry out a restore. (If they did you might not buy the program).

I use Norton Ghost and find it 100% reliable . If you are able to create the ghost image using the boot disk then that image can be rewritten back to your C drive. If you want to check that it is a viable image, you can open it with Ghost Explorer and look at the directories and files to check their integrity. If you still have doubts you can even restore something like an image file to see that it all works.

I do not have experience with Drive Image, but if you can explain what is going wrong when you try to restore a ghost image I might be able to help you.

64682 2002-07-24 10:58:00 Boom23 reminds me of one complication using Ghost with XP/NTFS

I gave up NTFS for three reasons:

1) It used too much disk space for its file structure

2) It used more overhead than FAT32 because of its security features

3) It is not 100% comfortable with Ghost because ghost is a DOS based system .

I used Partition Magic to convert my NTFS partitions to FAT32 (without loss of data or any such problems) and have never regretted it .
