64570 2002-07-23 11:28:00 Files with the extension .bmp SHOULD open in graphics programs such as Paint or Photoshop.

Reasons that I can think of for it not opening include:
corrupted file
a different type of file that someone has renamed with a .bmp file extension.

Questions:
Have you opened it before?
Where did you get it from - friend, off the net, email...?

64571 2002-07-23 11:47:00 yeah in addision to what heather said, if u have win xp go to folder options then go to View then tick/untick hide extensions for known file types then check to see if that file is a bmp, if it isn't use file investigator on this month's pcworld cd) and see wot type of file it is and rename it to it's proper association then hide the extensions. and voila should work. only with xp though.

64572 2002-07-23 11:58:00 Not just XP.

On Win 98 go to Windows Explorer; Tools; Folder Options; View and make sure "Hide file extensions for known file types" is NOT checked (it is unchecked by default). Then look at the file name.

Some viruses rely on this default feature of Windows. You see dog.bmp and think it is a picture of a dog. In actual fact the file name is dog.bmp.scr which is NOT a picture but code. Nasty.

Opening it without up-to-date virus protection.... :-(

64573 2002-07-23 12:05:00 wow. i never knew all the old windows platforms could do that.
nice........ i thought that u manually had to rename it like john.bmp-john.gif in win 95 & 98

64574 2002-07-23 12:13:00 or in DOS:
ren john.bmp john.gif

Problem is then that the file won't open cause the header in the document does not match the extension so the program doesn't know what to do with it.
