| 64530 | 2002-07-23 08:45:00 | Whie surfin F1 it seems if computers, software and hardware are getting more powerful and faster, problems seem to be increasing or is it that more people are fiddling where they are not suppose to to be or go. What was wrong with the old Commadore or Amiga etc as you could just about do any thing with them and most times they just kept goin. I think Kiwi's are just inquisitive - true. We are all computer techno's - right - I think I am - true again ----- cool spellin? |

I believe it is to do with problems increasing. It is a phenomoenoeomem (sp?) that goes beyond computers - went your start pushing boundaries, things start breaking. Human Being is not as smart as (s)he thinks (s)he is. > What was wrong with the old Commadore or > Amiga etc as you could just about do any thing with > them and most times they just kept goin. True, they were the playstations of their time though. Let's face it though, did your dad ever do the company accounts on a 128? No they used bigger, expensive machines (around $10-20 grand each) that they had to program if they wanted anything out of it. > I think > Kiwi's are just inquisitive - true. Yes, as a result, Kiwi's are also an inventive lot. :) What would you like to invent today? > We are all computer techno's - right - I think I am - > true again ----- cool spellin? No we are all computer technos. My immediate extended family has about 5 PCs (not including mine), one of which is used often. My uncle has got to the stage where he absolutely refuses to allow anyone to install anything on his computer. His reason is that he is sick of it crashing, and things going wrong etc. All the times I have been called in to fix it, the problem has been lack of user knowledge. (He does a quickrestore whenever things go seriously wrong) The rest of the family are just plain scared of them! (Mum and Dad only use theirs for email, nothing more!) :) |

| 64538 | 2002-07-24 02:34:00 | Hi all - I'm not really a Techno - but when i do something right on the puter, I think I am. If I can't fix it, thats when the real people come in - hopefully on PRESS F1. | Laurie (485) | ||
| 64539 | 2002-07-24 02:53:00 | "Company accounts on a 128"? People used the Apple II as a business computer in the UK. LOTS used the BBC, which was comparable to a C64. Many people ran company accounts on IBM PCs and XTs (with 512 kB memory). Lotus 1-2-3 came on (I think) 2 360k floppies. When you have an operating system with "40 million lines of new code" you are going to have a lot of bugs. If you have a computer big enough to hold an OS that big, people are going to make bigger applications (which are going to have new bugs). And when, rather than getting an operating system which is gradually improved with "fixes", there is a "new and better" one released in a couple of years, you are going to keep having buggy software. And undeservedly rich software companies. |
