65238 2002-07-25 09:25:00 Can any one tell me what Svchost.exe is and what it is used for
My firewall says it is asking to access the internet
on various ports and remote addresses

ie port 1900 address 239.255.255.250
port 67 address 192.168.0.1
port68 address 255.255.255.255

Should I give it access or not

Cheers Jim B

65239 2002-07-25 09:32:00 Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that are run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). Is normally found in Win2000 I think.

So I guess the answer is yes. (Thanks Graham L)

You can do a check to see what services are running using Tlist.exe
from the Windows 2000 installation CD's Support\Tools folder, Extract the Tlist.exe utility from the Support.cab file.
See link
Anything that looks dodgy in this list can be looked up in google to see what it does, or is able to do
Port 1900 is Simple service discovery protocol
Here is a link to some common ports:

Port 67 and Port 68 should be DHCP to and from your your ISP
