65067 2002-07-25 04:56:00 Boy o boy what a complete dipsh*t I have been, I have been having a little trouble with the mouse and keyboard cables binding on the sides of my CD Writer.
So I made a 30mm high box with no ends so the cables would pass under neath and not be a problem.
Okay now the stupid bit, The computer was on, mistake # 1 mistake # 2 I raised the CD Writer up a couple of cm and slipped the box under neath. :_|
That was when a message appeared on the screen saying somthing about I should have unplugged it first. I dont remember excatly what what the message was, because now the CD Writer dont work.
Tried unplugging it, uninstalling the software and reinstalling the software.
By lifting it could I have upset the workings inside.
And if I have, please dont bullsh*t me will it be expensive, that is anyone has had to have one repaired of course. Of course only a dipsh*t would lift a finely balanced and expensive piece of equippment.
The Writer is a HP 8200 series and is 14 months old.

cheers merlin-nz ;)

65068 2002-07-25 05:19:00 Hi Merlin

If it can be shipped halfway around the world it will not be that fragile. I take it that it is an external model and that you have carefully checked all external connections.

When you reinstalled did you reboot after the uninstall with the drive disconnected, then reconnect the drive and reboot again to allow the computer to detect it?

Sequence of events can be quite critical for some hardware installations so I'd take a few deep breaths, clear the installation again and start from scratch following the original instructions. Make sure you do a cold reboot (full power-off) after uninstalling and disconnecting, then switch off, connect the drive and switch on.

If nothing else you will know if your computer can even see the drive after that exercise.

Cheers & good luck

Shut down the computer, switch off at the wall.
No drivers are installed.
Power on to Start computer.
Connect power suppy to cd writer and plug in usb cable to computer.
CD Writer made usual noise, ok.
Bottom of screen in task bar icon for "Unplug or Eject Hardware".
Writer door now open and closes, ok.
Insert driver cd into D drive :Start installion screen. ok.

65070 2002-07-25 06:26:00 I was wondering if the drive was a printer-port one, and you had just encountered the fatal "live unplug" syndrome I have heard of. USB is said to be hot-pluggable, but obviously it can get confused. :-(

Lucky. That time. ;-)
