65032 2002-07-25 02:06:00 Ho hum! Here we go again!

Not content with stealing images (got them back with God's help), the greebnchs are now swallowing PDF files. :O

Previously (i.e. in the years BG), whenever Google found me an interesting looking PDF file, clicking the link would open it. Now when I click, there is a burst of download activity followed by a blank screen with "Done" in the bottom left corner. And I certainly have been, there's not a PDF to be seen! ?:|

A quick search with Ztree locates the file in IE's temporary internet cache and I can copy it across to where it belongs but it was ever so much easier when I didn't have to go into manual intervention mode. :(

Remembering God's divine assistance on the missing pictures, I thought to myself: Aha! :) I'll be a smartie and go check tools/options/advanced. No joy there though, so what calls Acrobat after a PDF is downloaded?

PDF's open with Acrobat when clicked from normal directories (and I checked, they open in IE as well) so I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

Cheers

P.S. In case you were wondering Susan, greebnchs are mutated bubnchs that have crossed to the dark side where they now infest computer internal instruction sets. They are probably just syntax errors in the commands, but they cause perfectly reasonable requests to fall on deaf ears and previously legitimate commands to refuse to obey the rules.

65033 2002-07-25 02:32:00 Hey guess what? I think it's a MIME type problem :D

Similar to what I was having but not as bad.

In windows explorer, go Tools -> folder options... click the file types tab

.. hang on I'll get back to you - I don't have PDF reader installed :^O

65034 2002-07-25 02:48:00 Ok, in the files types, click 'Adobe Acrobat Document' then [EDIT..]

Make sure Content Type is set to application/pdf
and Default extension for content type is set to .pdf

Newer version of acrobat display the pdf in IE or Navigator. If the above doesn't work, try reinstalling Acrobat.

I wonder why they called it Acrobat?

65036 2002-07-25 03:47:00 ... ??? ...

Yesterday afternoon, I was looking at some PDFs. Two on the same page. One gave the blank screen and "Done" (after the appropriate time to download); the other displayed in Acrobat.

It's all magic. Or something.

65037 2002-07-25 03:51:00 I'm ahead of you there Peter, I have a PDF folder with a whole raft of subfolders beneath it to store the files by category of interest.

Cheers

65038 2002-07-25 04:16:00 I hope those blasted Greebnchs are not contagious.. flu was bad enough! Chris Wilson (431)
65039 2002-07-25 04:52:00 Could be Chris, Graham seems to be suffering from a similar infection.

Meantime, back at the Ranch, I uninstalled Acrobat 4.0 and installed Acrobat 5.05 (courtesy June PCW CD, where else. Do the extra Adobe files on that CD have a time limit?)

Acrobat 5.05 offered no improvement, I had earlier checked your advice Elwin but all settings were ok. I unchecked "confirm open after download" just in case but it made no difference.

Buggered if I know, I'm leaving it to the brains-trust for now.

Cheers

Try setting your Active X to prompt, have another go and this time accept the "invitation" to use A.X ...

65041 2002-07-25 05:46:00 I'll be interested if you find an answer for this .

At work we put PDFs on a website . Some time back a customer rang complaining our site was down cause the pdfs weren't loading . She gave me a couple of the file names and I downloaded them no problem .

So . . I rang our host in Tauranga and begged assistance . His comment was that such things happen occassionally and it seemed to be a problem with Microsoft not being totally happy at working with Adobe .

As our files have the choice of download to screen then save or just save he suggested that our client use the save option and open them straight from the hard drive .

This gets round the IE/Acrobat conflict .

If someone does know the IE and/or Acrobat settings it would be useful for future reference . My guess would be there is some obscure tweak somewhere but not having had the problem personally I haven't gone looking for it .
