65009 2002-07-25 00:52:00 recently my desktop has started making sounds when i start it up - via the systems speaker - i know from when i incorrectly installed ram that it is trying to tell me something..... a long tone followed by three shorts?

the only thing i have done recently to the desktop is to disconnect the monitor and use it on my laptop - then plug it back in to the desktop prior to booting.

these symptoms appear a week ago but ?resolved its self ? after the third reboot??

can any one translate for me?

cheers will wright

65010 2002-07-25 01:16:00 You will need to tell us the Make/Model/Engine size/chassis number

We will also need to know your BIOS manufacturer (AMI, Pheonix, AST...)

The beeps are POST talking to you - Power On Self Test

If I'm right, then you are having memory problems. Check that the modules are seated properly. If so, check for a faulty one by pulling out one at a time and seeing when the beeping stops.

65011 2002-07-25 01:27:00 the machine is a intel pentium 233 built by the "former" PC direct NZ in ?1996 with 64meg ram - how do i find out the other information you indicated?

you suggest checking the memory modules are seated - ???? the case hasnt been opened recently - and the pc hasnt been moved - can the memory become "unseated " in those circumstances??

? i mentioned the POST tone relating to ram - only because that was the learning experiance i had that told me the current tone was trying to tell me something

appreciate you help on this ,
cheers will

65012 2002-07-25 01:31:00 that this problem occurs during boot up - which then dosent progress further than the inital whirrr - not even as far as the boot password.

through out the monitor remains blank. - the pc keeps running

65013 2002-07-25 02:24:00 If you can get the computer going, then download and install and run BIOS agent from [ur/=http://www.mrbios.com/biosagent/ba.exe]here[/url].

This will tell you about your BIOS. Post as much as possible here.

Alternatively, if you can't run the PC, take the cover off and look at the chips on the motherboard (mainboard). You should see one about 1cm wide by 2-3 cm long. It will have a bright shiny sticker on it saying Award, Pheonix, AMI, Flash (these are the most popular).

65014 2002-07-25 10:13:00 Long-short-short-short beeps is from the motherboiard (not actually bios) and indicates video adapter error, the m/b cannot access a video adapter.

Check that your video card is seated, if its an on-board chipset, ?????oh dear?

65015 2002-07-25 10:26:00 Goddy, it depends on the manufacturer. _... means to some a video error, to others a memory error. Elwin Way (229)
65016 2002-07-25 10:57:00 and if you take the lid off watch out for static!

Turn computer off first,

Ground yourself by touching case,

If possible wear an anti-static wrist strap

BEFORE touching ram or other circuit boards .

65018 2002-07-26 04:19:00 Electronic dryer packed up - continuous beep on start. Rang F&P and was told to take the plug out of the wall, hold the pins against the palm of my hand whilst I counted to 10, then put plug it back in and restart. It worked.

Something to do with capacitors, grounding, discharging electrical particles.... ?
