64944 2002-07-24 10:48:00 Some of you may of remembered I was having problems with XP and virtual memory, later on many other problems occured.

Well I reformatted the HDD, I was going to reformat the computer anyway...just hadn't got round to it till now.

After watching a mpeg I got off Kazza, a little thing poped up from the tray saying "you are low on disk space" I looked on my HDD and I had 138MB free space!!!!!!...out of 19GB

Now keep in mind I had only reformatted the HDD the night before! I have very little on the Hard Drive!

So I decided to have a poke round C drive and see whats taking up all this space. Various programs that I had installed before I reformatted have reapeared in C Drive!

For example, the files for Halflife and about 4 Mods for it are in C:/Sierra but I never reinstalled Half Life after the Reformat???

But even before the reformat I had atleast 4.3GB free space, I have no idea what is taking up my HDD.

Could it be a virus?
I wouldn't know, Norton Antivirus refuses to install, Live update for Internet Security doesn't work

The reformat:
OS is XP Pro, I had a FAT 32 File system. While reformatting a message came up saying converting the file system to NTFS would increase stability and have better effeciency with storing files. So I converted to NTFS.

Please help!....again

64946 2002-07-24 10:52:00 Mr I.

How did you reformat your HDD? It sounds like you might not have reformatted, but just converted from Fat32 to NTFS (which is one of the options on the Win XP CD).

64947 2002-07-24 10:59:00 Hmmm.....possible lol.

How would you go about completly reformatting a HDD with XP, all the ways I usually did with a ME PC don't seem to work anymore.

64948 2002-07-24 11:00:00 But why wouldn't the pre-reformat programs not be in the registry? Mr. Insanity (957)

because it sounds to me like you reinstalled XP over the top, so you'd have a new registry, but all your programs were left on the disk.

Re run the XP Setup (start your computer with the XP CD in the drive and it should boot from the CD) and read the instructions and steps carefully. At some point you'll be given a number of options like Formatting, Quick Formatting, Converting to NTFS, using the disk as-is etc. Make sure you pick the formatting option - then its up to you whether you use FAT32 or NTFS.
