64908 2002-07-24 09:35:00 Okay . . .

Running Win98 SE on an older system .
Freshly reformatted, reinstalled system and just the basic apps running (IE 5 . 5 etc)

Then . . . download AVG anti viral software . Install AVG .

First mistake - installing some other apps with out rebooting system between each installation - (also loaded Winzip8 . 1 and ICQ2000b) .

Reboot system . Update config files . . . starting Win-*HUURK!* Error message . Registry is unaccessible . Must reboot using backed up version of registry .
Okay reboot .

System loads just fine . AVG loads up - spits the dummy . Bad installation please reinstall . Hmm . Probably went bad due to using back up version of registry .

Uninstall AVG using uninstall option from startup menu - loads setup sequence - screen goes black .
CTRL-ALT-DEL . . . . system reboots . Uninstall AVG again . . . . screen goes black . . . . CTRL- ALT- DEL .

More error messages - system crawling as AVG tries to check CD-ROM and system for virii at bootup - AVG bad installation - needs to be reinstalled . AVG not listed in Add-remove software list - okay . . . delete the program file and try reinstalling - can't delete the program directly as two files are being used by windows . . . . . System crashes as AVG tries to check anything put near it for virii . . . .

Run Regclean and EasyCleaner to see if registry corrupted - no solutions or identifiable improvements .

Finally - log on to PressF1 and post long and detailed plea for assitance with conclusion that IF there is some way of successfully removing uninstallable and dodgy programs so it can be reinstalled properly (or not at all - come back Nortons all is forgiven!) I would love to hear about it .

thanks
Paul

(I'm guessing you formatted to ensure a clean system)
Problems uninstalling individual programs are usually answered by the author of the software .
Have you checked the AVG site?

How do I uninstall AVG?

You can uninstall by using one of the following:

Click START -> Programs -> AVG 6 . 0 Antivirus System -> Uninstall AVG
Click START -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
In MS DOS prompt -> go to the AVG folder -> run setup . exe /UNINSTALL

Have you tried to uninstall in safe mode?

64910 2002-07-24 10:33:00 If you have only JUST done the reformatt, I would redo it again, that way you can leave out what is mucking your computer up Baldy (26)
64911 2002-07-24 10:36:00 Paul, it is possible, but set aside an hour or so.

When you uninstall a program from add/remove programs, all you are really doing is (essentially) running a program that runs a script backwards, or undoes everything (to some degree, not always true!.)

So, you will have to do a manual search for references to the program in the following areas:
Registry
Win.ini
system.ini
autoexec.bat

Also look in directories such as

C:/window/system,
C:/windows,
C:/program files/common

At the end of the day you may just get away with reinstalling AVG. Just pretend it never was there in the first place. :) Try that first.

64912 2002-07-24 14:18:00 I use Roxia GoBack so dont even bother uninstalling ,I just rewind the PC back to its original condition prior to the disater this has saved me about 30x so far in two months ido a lot of experimenting lol.
You need a large HDD though as it uses up 10% for restoration up to 5 days back on my Pc also it causes the HDD to work overtime when your PC is idle until it backs up all your changes also it cant save you from a HDD failure.

64913 2002-07-28 00:58:00 Thanks for the advice and feedback.

I think I have bigger issues than AVG now.

The original problem started with a registry fault - which developed into a total system crash.

Reformatted the HDD and started clean - it was fine in that case until I installed AVG - which then seemed to cause the same report of a registry fault and which made the system revert back to a backed up version - thus losing all reference it seemed to installed programs and causing more trouble (culminating in a registry/system crash that froze the PC entirely)

So I reformatted the entire HDD again and started fresh again.

This installation lasted 35 minutes longer than the previous one.

This time AVG was fine - It ran and scanned and was a joy to behold.

Wary of possible software problems I even reinstalled Win98 SE from a different CD - just in case.

I also installed and rebooted some other software - one app at a time - and everything was fine. Until I installed ICQ - this time from a CD source - not a download which is how I had installed that program 2 days before.

Registry error - restarting from backed up version - system crash - won't go.

So I'm now thinking - It isn't the application software that's at fault - it has crashed on different programs loaded from different sources.

Is there a possible hardware fault (though Scandisk HDD physical scan showed it's fine) - is it a sign of a possibly dodgey CPU or other component that is effecting the registry?

64914 2002-07-28 01:41:00 it could be a bug in the version of ICQ??

you say you installed from diffrent sources but was it the same version?

I would point the finger at ICQ just because a friend of mine installed ICQ about three weeks ago and windows 98 did a "crash and burn" with the registry.

64916 2002-07-28 22:56:00 nope 2 different versions - one downloaded (2002b) and the more recent from a PCW CD (2002a) both have worked fine on the same system before.

The system is going to be a paper weight until Xmas - then it gets replaced with something new and shiny.

Meanwhile running on a back up PC....

64917 2002-07-29 01:37:00 comon cause for that would be a corruption in system files, main cuplrit for this is a bad sector in the HDD or the RAM, if you need a good ram tester post your email, i will send it to you

if scandisk picks up nothing on your hdd, partition your hdd in half and then try installing 98, this should move the system files slightly, well enough to save them from corrupting in an undetectable hdd error, if this solves the problem then get access to nortan system works and do a complete disk check

I know this might sound strange but ME has a lot of those errors, i often start with a 98 bootdisk and delete the user . dat files, when you restart the pc it recreates them in a diff place, could work for 98 as well .

one of the above fixes should work temporarily anyway

i still have several up my sleve if these don't work
