65131 2002-07-26 08:48:00 i don't know with any new vers but blackice dosn't stop applactions from accessing the net. like XP'sfirewall it only stops incoming. however i heard somewhere that they were going to put applaction control into blackice which will be good.

i have not had any probs with ZA untill ver3 came out. i switched to outpost and have stayed ever since. i tried kero but that crashed on install so i gave that up for a bad joke. tiny has always been good but has been very tricky to set up properly. more suited to techs. however by now they could have fixed that.

65132 2002-07-27 12:59:00 I used to run ZA and it was great, but now i'm not on any firewall. been running without one for a few months now.. no problem.

As long as there's not viruses or trojans that could create blackhole in your OS, it shouldn't any problem. It takes a very skilled hacker to hack into home computers without and trojans installed. And most of the hackers and just lamers, they run programs and scan the ports, etc and wait for the response. A friend of mine had his entire partition formatted when he was as asleep by hacker. He had a trojan sitting there for a while and had no idea of it.

bollocks. its piss easy provided you find the tools and you can find an unprotected pc. expeacialy easy if they have windows printer and file sharing.

once a tool is made for a hole in the os/browser/email its just a matter of time before someone uses it.

65134 2002-07-27 21:39:00 Thats right our very own Geoff Palmer gave a good description on how to do this in PCWorld mag a couple of years back. Mike-Y (908)

Its nothing to do with how well it works in the tests - most firewalls these days have the same result. Its the annoyance and the bugs that ZA provides you with that I'm talking about.

65138 2002-07-28 00:45:00 Sygate Personal Firewall (freeware) does it for me . It was covered alongside Zone Alarm in a PC World article some time ago . I have tried ZoneAlarm a couple of times, and found it problemmatic and annoying .

Sygate is much more user friendly, and just as well reviewed on the test websites . Mine passes all the tests on grc . com etc

Regarding BlackIce, I read some horrendous articles about its poor quality when I was doing some of my own research about which firewall to use, so I didn't even try it . Sadly I didn't keep the urls for the articles . Perhaps a search for BlackIce on PressF1 will get you some useful references to it as it has been discussed here before .

Personally, given my experience with Sygate Personal Firewall (thanks NZ PC World!) I can see no justification at all for spending money on a commercial product like Nortons .

65139 2002-07-28 00:56:00 no it's not that easy. A fresh install of OS with cable modem connection is ofcourse hackable, but it takes still a skilled hacker to do this. What i mean is, a real hack sits down and writes his own codes and usually these programs aren't available on the net.

>once a tool is made for a hole in the os/browser/email its just a matter of time before someone uses it.

i've been into computing for about 6 years now and never had an attack that successfuly made its way into my computer. My pc wasn't protected with anything apart from antivirus.

It is ofcourse easy to hack into home computers if you have some other software installed which could compromise the OS or ports.

I remember using sub7 back few years ago, I couldn't get in to a pc without sub7 trojan being installed on the machine.

65140 2002-07-28 01:33:00 The reason why people find that there computers don't get hacked into is because these hackers have better places to hack.

The average PC is of no use to be hacked into. Unless it has a good internet connection in which case it may be hacked into for the purpose of helping undertake a DrDOS (distributed denial of service).

A lot of hackers are good anyway. They will gain access to a system and just leave a friendly note that the system is accessible.

While others are just stupid little script kiddies using more talented peoples tools to claim that they are hackers and are 1337. Where in actual fact that they are just some annoying little [insert put down here]. With no life and is a complete waste of space.
