65592 2002-07-26 07:03:00 Hey

I have been told that i need directx 8.1 for the games i wish to run (told by the game that is)

Could this in any way stuff up my computer? I recently tried to update my grpahics card drivers and my computer had to be fixed up by a technician becuase the drivers were to new for the monitor i have(like putting V8 in mini). Could directx 8.1 do this as well?

Thanks

65594 2002-07-26 08:58:00 at a guess i think it will be a case of try it and see. unfortunatly you have a kyro which while not a bad card are known to have incompatability problems with a lot of games.

sounds like bull. monitor hasn't got much to do with video card drivers.

just back up all important stuff and try it and see.

65595 2002-07-26 08:59:00 I've never had any problems updating directX on a number of systems .

Although it is hard to remove if it does break something .

65596 2002-07-26 09:04:00 By "problems with video drivers and old monitor" I assume it was trying to drive your monitor at too high a resolution and/or scan setting?

Both of these are adjustable under (right click on blank area of desktop) properties - settings.

I support the previous comment that your monitor settings are different to your video drivers. If you updated your monitor driver with the wrong one it could have tried to operate it at the wrong parameters, admittedly but that is not your video drivers.

Direct X will be a suck it and see, but should be OK....

65597 2002-07-26 21:54:00 unfortunately you guys don't have parents moaning on about how you always break everything....They get stressed when I change the background for gods sake... I don't think ill risk it Polk (1135)
65598 2002-07-27 06:02:00 Not any more, but staying up all night trying to fix the computer before your parents find out is a great way to learn about windows :-). bmason (508)
65599 2002-07-27 06:27:00 Direct X is available from the Windows site - along with windows updates both critical and optional .

I would suggest you visit the site - with your parents - and see what updates are required .

Point out to them that critical updates are just that - critical - and should be installed . (Windows has bugs and holes . When Microsoft find the bugs and holes they provide patches for them as updates) .

Once through the critical part you can then look at optional updates - like Direct X .

Perhaps after displaying knowledge about the critical ones they may be willing to try the optionals .

To reach the update site:
Start; Windows Updates and click on Product Updates

or in IE:
Tools; Windows Update

Involving parents in the process has advantages . Less liable to yell if they were involved in the decisions

65600 2002-07-27 06:39:00 Another small point. Go visit the update site (and product update link), have a look round and see what's available. By familiarizing yourself first you will then be knowlegable when taking your parents to it.

On clicking the product link a screen will come up for a minute or two telling you it is looking at the system to see what you need. That's normal and won't hurt anything.
