| 65328 | 2002-07-25 10:59:00 | OK... so I've installed WinXP Pro few days ago and eveything was running smoothly and I was praising Windows for once. But now I take it all back. Here's the problem. My internet connection only last for a limited time. After that, even when I'm still dialled in, there's no traffic at all. No difference if I disconnect and re-connect. The only way to establish connection is to restart the computer. This happens to both my Ihug Ultra and Clear connections - ie it globally affects my internet connection. I don't know at what point it started doing this 'cos I've been updating my softwares to make it WinXP useable since installing WinXP. I've even tried re-installing via "Repair" mode but still the same. In fact, I might eventually consider a clean install to see if it makes any difference. Any ideas or clues? Thanks in advance. |

I had a connexant HCF 56k soft modem that would only work 1st time, and would actually crash the PC second time unless rebooted. (no mean feat to crash XP..) Another PC (different Motherboard) would run the same type of modem eratically, with great pauses. Correct drivers have been known to help (look on manufacturers site) but in all fairness XP compatability wizard had said they were a no-go. External hardware modems fixed it (serial RS232) |

The current driver is the one that came with WinXP. At the moment it seems to work for perhaps 20-30mins before it fails completely. Nothing will get beyond the internet connection - web browsers, e-mail, peer-to-peer softwares. Absolutely nothing. Anybody else had similar problems? Any point in trying a clean install (I initially started off with an "Upgrade" install)? Or should I just get a non-winmodem? Thanks. |

| 65332 | 2002-07-25 11:47:00 | Many people have had problems. In fairness a lot must also work, but research has shown they are highly variable, dependant probably on other hardware and interrupt use. I know of some that work fine, and some that work part-time, and some that don't work at all. Avoid USB modems as well I believe. |
