66156 2002-07-28 03:47:00 My cpu (about 2 years old) has developed a loud whirring/cranking noise on boot-up. It doesn't do it every time, maybe every third or fourth, for the last few weeks. As soon as it has completed booting, the noise disappears. help please!! :- izzie (1237)
66157 2002-07-28 04:03:00 It's more likely to be to cooling fan than the CPU, first you will have to establish weather it is the power supply cooling fan or the CPU fan, It is probably more likely to be the Power Supply cooling.

If you feel confident installing one your self then buy a replacement from DSE or somewhere, if not then take it into your local computer store and get them to replace the cooling fan.

66158 2002-07-28 04:47:00 Ummm. Make sure that you have backed up anything which you would not like to lose. A fan noise is unlikely to happen only while booting.

Does the noise start again when you start a application? If so, the disk could be about to fail. :-(

66159 2002-07-28 05:26:00 actually a fan can make a noise only when booting. this is due to the fan taking a while to get up to speed because of stuffed bearings. once up to speed the noise will go. tweak'e (174)
66160 2002-07-28 06:20:00 Yes, we have a computer at home that has the fan making loud noises only while booting up about every 4th time, so I would say that it is highly possible that it is the fan making these noises. Sam H (525)
