66118 2002-07-27 20:00:00 Had problems with ME displaying all icons and very slow. Outlook Express 6.0 very slow to receive or not receiving mail. After unloading all programs runnining from startup, still a problem. Nortons also unloaded, still aproblem. Next I uninstalled Explorer...mistake.
Now no icons on desktop, no Start button, no taskbar...nothing.
Reinstalled ME to the old folder, C:\Windows, (renamed old win.com). No change, desktop still a problem.
Shell32.dll errror on startup and exception error in dll install in C:\Windows\system\shdocvw.dll.
Any suggestions on where to proceed from here?Really do not want to do a clean install as I need to recover some of the data and mail.

wombat,

you made a drastic mistake :( Win ME is completely dependant on IE 5 or 6 being installed, thus removing it means that Windows will not function. Really the only suggestion I can make is to put your HDD into another computer and copy your files/mail, then do a fresh install and then copy your needed files and mail back. Sorry I can't help further.

66120 2002-07-27 23:06:00 I think I had the very same problem a few months back, when I tried to uninstall IE6 and revert to IE5.5 (using add/remove programs)

I had to do a complete reinstall - as absolutely nothing was being displayed on my desktop apart from some dll message.

66121 2002-07-27 23:07:00 didnt know it was possible to uninstal windows explorer (but guess you now know its not as well)..
I am assuming you mean explorer and not internet explorer (but removing IE totally isnt on either)

Renaming win.com is not all that effective, as most of the functionality is in the kernel and dll's.

If you have no task bar etc you may have painted yourself into a corner, refreshing windows may not overwrite corrupted dll's etc.

If you could access start-run-and use the sfc routine to replace system files that are dud it may be a start. Otherwise boot to dos and save your critical data and clean install??

godfather,

Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer are basically the same thing in later versions of Windows (I think 98SE upwards).

66123 2002-07-27 23:13:00 If you have an OEM restore CD, you may be able to do a restore without a format. This will just overwrite the windows stuff, but you will also have to reinstall your programs.

If you have an actual windows CD, then this is definately possible.

read FAQ#1 (pressf1.co.nz), and FAQ#11 (pressf1.co.nz)

Either way, you're definately in for a reinstall.

66124 2002-07-28 00:08:00 I tried the same uninstall trick with ME and OE 6 and IE6 and ended with a big mess. I tried a soft reformat which reverted back to OE5.5 and IE5.5 and on the surface looked OK . BUT, when you try to update back to version 6 it will not install the update because it reckons that you already have version 6 (even you can see for yourself that you indeed still have ver 5.5).

I went round and round in circles for some with this problem and only a total reformat fixed it :-(.

66125 2002-07-28 03:42:00 I thought that MS lost a court case, and were told not to make a browser part of their "operating system". ]:) They really ought to have their hands smacked, hard. And their wallet, harder. Graham L (2)

I think they were actually in trouble for making IE4 such a BIG part of the OS that it actually created problems for, or even disabled, competitors browsers...
