I've gone through 3 business plans... I hate them! I got books out from the library, talked to people, and got advice on what should be in a business plan... too much.

Sure I could write up something with some goals (like..?) and ideas.

How about this:

I want to run my own business fixing computers / making websites / customising cases.

I want to make money from it.

That's my business plan. I don't really like the politics of business. I just want to do the work and make some money... BTW I have been in contact with Porirua Business thingy.. they don't seem to want to help somebody who has no personal investment or even venture capital...

65897 2002-07-27 22:33:00 3 books from the library at 11pm on a Saturday night? Read them by 1am Sunday???

Suggestion: Try WINZ. I have a client who is planning a web site business. She has done courses through WINZ on things like business plans and is applying for grants to set the business up. (Funnily enough, with the dot.com crashes they are - wisely - putting her through the hoops). I also have a new immigrant tenant who did a CV writing course through them last week.

It sounds like they have vast amounts of resources for those who ask the right questions.

I'm doing a course at Tech "Project Management & Control". The text book is brilliant. If you can get hold of a copy it's well worth the read (short, simple, reads like a paperback, great introduction to planning projects).

"A Practical Guide to Project Planning" by Celia Burton with Norma Michael. Published in NZ by Reed.

Also, you've been offered help, follow up on it.

FIGJAM! :D

Naa, just kidding . I meant, I have written 3 business plans before . Library books came out slightly before them .

I have - 3 times . All three times I got the response - "sorry, there is no funding available (in this area)" . Porirua BizInfo basically said the same thing . Trust me, if I had the money, I'd be out there .

And appeal to them somehow?

Project management sounds to me to be a bit of black magic - like marketing and accounting . . . what is it?

Thanks, I think at the moment, I just need a shove in the right direction .

65899 2002-07-27 23:35:00 Think, if you have your own business you can register for GST making upgrading your computer 12.5% cheaper!!! (as long as it's used for the business of course!)

Not only 12.5% cheaper but you will also buy parts in at cost!!!!!!!!!
think of the savings

By the way i think everyone should stop pressuring Elwin into starting a business, it seems quite obvious that he does not want to take the risk involved, and there are some.

65900 2002-07-28 01:34:00 I think you might be misreading the replies a bit roofus . . . . . . . and I say this in a nice way too . Everyone is just trying to encourage elwin as we all beleive that he can do it and suceed well at the business . We've been reading his posts for quite a while and the calibre of the people that are trying to encourage him indicate that he knows what he is talking about .

Even if elwin doesn't get startup $$ he can still slowly build up a business . Just by advertising on his website and spreading the word through friends etc he can do things like reformatting and reinstalling on peoples puters which is something that a lot of people cant seem to do .

Perhaps elwin could do a training course which would mean he gets the student loan etc . A lot of computer repair courses also include the tools etc to get started and will also give elwin a pretty certificate to hang on his wall and calm his customers down with . . . . . lol The training institute will probably also have resources and people with experience in the computer repair industry/business

65901 2002-07-28 02:58:00 Elwyn . That old saying applies here, "better to have loved & lost than never loved at all" . If you & fail at least you tried, if you don't try you will never know how successful you might have become . The biggest Electronic Fixing Firm in the Wellington area might be forced to buy you out!!! So Mate, no more excuses, get off your bum & give it a go . Where is your Kiwi Inginuity & No 8 wire . Hi Elwyn, i did some research into the same kind of thing (e.g funding for setup of a new biz) for a friend a few months back, and i just dug out all the imfo i had to refresh my memory for you.
There are 2 things that are available through WINZ:-
An Enterprise Grant - to help with the cost of setting up your biz & buying stock parts etc...
An Enterprise Allowance - a weekly allowance that will help you while you get your biz up & running, you can use it to meet biz expenses or for living expenses while you get your biz underway.
It says that to get these allowances and the grant you need to go on an approved course such as "Be your own boss" course, however they will help with the cost of the course too. AND you need to provide a biz plan - which you will learn on the course.
I got all this imfo through the local Bizinfo centre and citizens advice.
I also think i remember seeing something at one of those places that related to funding for people with disabilities for their own biz.
Anyway by the sounds of things you have done all the right things and been to the right places, which is why i thought this imfo may have been of help to show that funding IS available - - - as for there not being funding for the area, don't accept it, go to the top - of say WINZ or even approach your local M.P, i have read cases of WINZ changing their answer to things when an M.P gets involved, its worth a try if you are serious. Anyway i hope some of this imfo is of help and i think you should go for it Elwin, another thought in relation to your comments on your hearing being a problem, what about some kind of user pays online help service which worked along the same lines of a forum or using instant messaging ??? Anyway as i said go for it Elwin - dipstick has given you a starting point, and good luck! :-)

65903 2002-07-28 06:01:00 What a great bunch of guys and guyesses you all are . All that support for Elwin . If he was but closer to me I`d be the first to use his experience .

Have had three dodgy experiences here in the BOP, do wish I could find someone I could trust to give me a good deal and not think they can lead me by the nose .

Still reckon I`ve learned more from this forum in the last year than from anywhere else .

Go for it Elwin

You plan to have a BBQ . What do you need?
A date for it
A list of invitees
Invitations
Sausages
Bread
BBQ
Fuel for BBQ
Enough plates, cutlery . . .
. . . .

You can wing it, or plan for it .

A Timeline - when do invites go out, when to go to the supermarket, food to be prepared ahead, time to start the barbie, what time to eat . . .

A Resource list
Tools - BBQ, Fuel, Tools, Food, Drink
People - who cooks what

A Budget - How much can you spend, how much do things cost

. . . .

This is a little project . Now upgrade it to a fundraiser .

- How many loaves of bread do you need to how many kg of sausages? (that one can keep a committee entertained for hours - on several occasions!)
- Who fills the gas bottle (seen at the Kumeu Show someone trying to go AGAINST the traffic to fill the bottle . BBQ delayed one hour)
- Will one person take the money and cook the sausages?

Good planning means all this and more is answered in advance - and it's all project planning .

Now to a business:
What branch of IT do you want to be in:
- Hardware - diagnostics? repairs? sales?
- Software - Mr Fixit - a smattering of everything from reformatting a computer to anti-virus
- Network configuration - Windows? Novell? Peer-to-peer? Client/Server?
- Web Design - Front end design? Back-end databases? Coding? Writing for the web?

What resources do you need?
Hardware - Screwdrivers, anti-static wrist strap, . . . .
Mr Fixit - disks, programs (diagnostic, antivirus . . . . )
. . . . .

Market:
local homes, local businesses . . . .

Advertising:
A4 sheet - printed at home, printed by printer?
Business cards
. . . .

Budget:
How much do you need to spend to set up?

The recommended book gives structure to the planning process .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Incidentally, how deaf are you? Stone deaf, tone deaf, hearing impaired? Was it recent - accident, illness or from birth?

Oh, and I thought of a name for your business - Way Out Computers .
