66091 2002-07-27 14:52:00 HI,
I have found a great program for my school known as the GIMP

we have a network (Windows Domain) at school where

1 . The kids sign or log in

2 . They can access their own file on a common drive (Not the C:\ Drive) but no one elses folders

3 . They do not have access to DOS and system commands in a DOS Box because of systems policies .

When GIMP (v1 . 2 . 0(?)) starts with the kids logged in, itappears to want to finsh its installation program but the kids not having access to DOS means that the box does not work or at least is not allowed to continue .

Is there a way of bypassing the want of GIMP to finish installing in the kids own directory using DOS commands or do later versions correct this "problem"?

TIA

66092 2002-07-28 02:38:00 Found PC Authority , did you Trevor? I doubt if there's a way to do it --- it's a Linux package, based on the very different Unix multiuser environment, and the Windows version has come later . You might have to install it as Administrator for each pupil's area .

But have a look at the home site for GIMP (not sure, but http://www . gimp . org/ should work) .

66093 2002-07-28 03:13:00 I don't know much about windows networking so this is just a guess.

GIMP is trying to create either $HOME/.gimp-1.2 or C:\Program Files\Gimp\share\gimp\1.2\gimp-1.2.$USERNAME to store its settings.

You could set $HOME to a shared directory for all the kids, then copy and existing .gimp-1.2 directory into (or run it with full access rights). It will probably work without write access to the directory.

Or you could try making a copy of an existing settings folder for each student and setting $HOME to the students home directory.

66094 2002-07-28 03:19:00 There is a Windows GIMP FAQ site (wingimpfaq.cjb.net/), also a Windows GIMP users mailing list (mailto:gimpwin-users-subscribe@yahoogroups.com). Perhaps look at that list (http:) before subscribing. ;-) Google found those with "gimp windows". Graham L (2)

This question was put on a "Windows GIMP users mailing list" I replied saying you can get excellent help from the F1 web site.

"Did I have someone on?"

66096 2002-07-29 03:42:00 "excellent advice on PressF1", of course . But only when people have had experience of the software . I have GIMP on one of my computers . It runs my scanner . But it's GIMP on a Linux machine . It happens to be on a network, but I use it on that machine . Not from other machines .

I don't know how the Windows version works in with networks . I suspect that it will work on a single machine . GIMP is free . I think the effort will have gone on making it work as a graphics package on a single machine, which is the most common use .

I suggested the (probably) US mailing list, because there are probably millions of people using Win GIMP there . There won't be that many here . Ever .

66097 2002-07-29 13:16:00 Hi... in reply to Graham, no offence taken but I had actually had the program for a while but downloaded 1.2.3 a couple of days ago ... I received an email from the other group suggesting that 1.2.3. does not have this problem

Thankyou for everyones input,

Regards

Trevor
