2002-07-29 22:12:00 | how many of you back up your data? and how often? and perhaps you could also tell me what you back up to? I'll like to get some realistic stats as to how many "home users" or small businesses do this.. :) thanks in advance

2002-07-29 22:17:00 | My PCs are each fitted with a second HDD, and a batch program (in DOS)to copy across key data on demand (daily). Approximately weekly a CDR of key data is recorded and kept in a fireproof safe. With 2 HDD failures in the last 3 months, its proven and works well.

2002-07-30 01:00:00 | I have to make do with partitioning my HD. Windows (and windoze only) on C:, programs get installed straight to D: and all my files go on E:. It's not the best, but I have had to reformat a few times and was glad that all my stuff was saved. Not really back-up, but it keeps everything separate. | Elwin Way (229) | |
2002-07-30 01:10:00 | I back up using Norton Ghost. I used to use the microsoft backup that came with my Windows ME but my drive has since grown to the size that this is no longer practical so have switched. I have one master back up on CD that is all my basics and the system operating at optimum and another on partition that is refreshed once a month. The cd version is in case of major failure and the partition backup is in case of playing too much with the wrong thing. I also just discovered a backup utility for my drivers which I will be adding to my backups from now on.

2002-07-30 01:24:00 | my own- multipartitions (60gig drive) as u proberly noticed windows has deid on me twice in the last cuple of months and i havn't lost any data. a lot of movies, mp3's are backed up onto cd (but need redoing). i have a 20gig drive as a backup (its is unplugged most of the time) on which i store backups. fortunatly most of my work stuff theses days is pretty basic and even if lost its not a mojor(just a pain in the......). however 90% of small busnesses that i know do not back up at all. (and 50% of them don't run upto date antivirus either)

2002-07-30 01:47:00 | The only thing That I do regarding backups, is I get the others using the computer to save all of their important data to floppy or cd. I never have anything worth worrying about, so when ever I lose data I don't really care. | NathanTheKind (472) | |
2002-07-30 02:31:00 | > however 90% of small busnesses that i know do not > back up at all. (and 50% of them don't run upto date > antivirus either) thats about right. And something like 95% of companies who experience a significant loss of data (they didn't back up, or didn't back up correctly) go out of business within the following year. scary stuff. everyone's on borrowed time it seems. another question - do you feel that it is a waste of money to purchase a small tape drive (or jaz/orb/mo drive) to back up your most important data on? and if you did lose all of your data (everything completely gone), how long do you think it would take you to recover?

2002-07-30 04:20:00 | put it this way....all of my small business customers who i have built a new pc for get a zip drive as standard. usually just a 100meg unless they need large backups. then it depends on what they back up. if its really huge stuff its normmally an extra hardrive (with caddy). not many round here need tape drives. if i lost everything it wouldn't be to bad as i don't have accounts on the pc. usually backup and running within a day. however i know people who have suffered hardrive failure and lost all there cleint info. i don't think they have ever recovered from it.

2002-07-30 14:29:00 | I dont mean to put a spanner in the works, but ... Fingers crossed, touch wood, and all that ... I have never done a back up in 6 years. :O I have never had to reformat. I have never been infected by a virus. Everything runs sweet. I have a good clean, scan disk, defrag, registry clean etc about once a week. Perhaps that helps. I always keep my drivers up to date. Checking windows for updates every 2 - 3 days. Run AVG anti virus, Zone Alarm. I know, I know. I should back up regularly. But I never get round to it. Perhaps the day will come when I wished I had. Good advice: Back up regularly. Do as I say, not do as I do.

2002-07-30 22:46:00 | My backup system fell apart the day the zip drive killed itself - The "Click of Death" This has trapped some stuff on zip disks as I don't know if the drive took any disks down with it. Current system is 2 partitions on one disk - C: OS and programs; D: data and downloaded zip files. Recent copies of all files on a second computer and a CD. Planned task: set up a schedule..... one day.
